Specific methods are used to manufacture CBD isolate from hemp extracts, like extractions based on ethanol or supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). The same extraction methods can also be used as a starting point for THC isolate, but usually with marijuana plants rather than industrial hemp. A variety of ingredients, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, fats, lipids, and other compounds, are extracted from the hemp plant when the CBD extraction phase occurs. After that, it is crucial to isolate the CBD compound from the rest of the extraction, which is achieved through a series of washing and separation processes.  

The cycle begins with a winterization process to remove the lipids, waxes, and fats from the hemp extract.  The next step involves mixing a hydrocarbon solvent such as pentane, to cause the CBD to precipitate leaving the unwanted plant particles, including THC, in solution.  The precipitate is then washed extensively to remove all residual solvent.  The result is a white powder, >99% CBD by weight.   Other procedure may involve falling film systems or chromatography approaches.   Falling film systems use heat and pressure to separate the cannabinoids, chromatography physically separates the cannabidiol from other plant molecules based on the physical or chemical properties of cannabidiol.  The resulting cannabidiol is then further refined to ensure all solvents and impurities are removed to create a >99% pure CBD isolate.
