There is often confusion surrounding CBD (cannabidiol) and there is plenty of reason for this. Unfortunately, CBD has been placed on the back burner for many years. But it is now taking a place in the spotlight.
The idea of giving your animals CBD is not a new one. The big question is how much to give your pet. There is much research that still needs to be done surrounding CBD in general and even more that needs to be done surrounding pets. With that being said, there has been research performed that could assist our customers with whatever questions they may have. We here at Panacea Life Sciences are here to help! This blog post will try to answer any questions you may have regarding CBD and your furry friends.
CBD? What is that?
Let’s start here at the basics. What is CBD?
CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids that are found in the Cannabis sativa plant. This cannabinoid has been found to assist in an overall wellbeing. This is often confused with the cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the cannabinoid that inebriates users, and this is why it is considered the most heard of.
There is indeed a difference between the two. Not only does CBD not get one high, it is legal in all 50 states. This is because of the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill allows farmers across the country to grow and sell the hemp plant. The hemp plant? What is that? It is a natural variation of the Cannabis sativa plant. The hemp plant contains high amounts of CBD and at or less than .3% of THC. This .3% of THC does not have the capability to get users high.
Marijuana, however, is not legal in all of the states because of the high amounts of THC and psychoactive components. There are states that have legalized the medicinal and/or recreational use of marijuana.
Now that we understand what CBD is and what it is not, why use CBD for your pet?
CBD for pets, why?
Why did using CBD for pets even cross anyone’s mind? For the same reasons that humans have started using CBD. Here is a list:
- Joint Health: We here at Panacea Life Sciences did our own research on this particular topic. We chose to look at dogs who have age-related movement disorders. Dogs, like us humans, develop stiff joints as they age making normal canine activities like running, getting up from a sitting position, and climbing stairs difficult. In our study, we had pet owners give their dogs CBD for four weeks twice a day. Owners described that their canines had increased mobility. This research was narrowed down to those dogs who had visible movement issues but, we can infer that it may help all dogs with joint health issues. You can read more about this here.
- Skin health: CBD has been described to improve skin health. For pets we offer a feline CBD Cream that may help a cat’s sense of calm as well as assist with joint health as shown with dogs.
- Sense of calm: CBD has been described to assist those who may have an overall sense of anxiousness to feel calmer. This has been described by CBD users, and pet owners who have given CBD to their animals. In another one of our studies we studied horses who had chronic discomfort, as well as feelings of anxiousness. This study is where we used horses to test the possible effects that CBD may have on their chronic discomfort or feelings of anxiousness. This was a two-week study where the horses were administered two times a day. We concluded that the use of CBD lowered the horse’s discomfort as well as produced a sense of calm.
These three reasons in particular can be deemed to be used for pets, but there are other reasons that may not adhere to animals but should be noted!
- FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) medications: There are several FDA medications that have been approved for human use. Epidiolex is one of them. This is used to help those who get seizures from these two severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Marinol (dronabinol), Syndros (dronabinol), and Cesamet (nabilone) assist those people who are going through anti-cancer treatments. It helps the nausea caused by the anti-cancer treatment to become reduced.
Dosage
The amount of CBD to be given to a pet really depends on their size and what type of animal they are. We here at Panacea Life Sciences have several different types of CBD to give to your furry friends. Our Canine Soft gels contain 5mg of THC free CBD oil. This is an easy way to make sure the amount you are giving to your pet.
We also have a CBD Canine Tincture. The tincture comes in several different MG based on the size of your dog. Therefore, the dropper will have the correct MG on it for easy administration.
Our Feline CBD Creme is easy to use as well. We also carry 50 mg CBD Equine Tablets that are easily placed in the mouth of your horse.
As a rule of thumb, we offer the advice to start with smaller amounts of CBD to see how your animal will react to it. Then slowly increase the amount when you and your pet feel comfortable. As always, we advise you to speak with your veterinarian before administering CBD to your pet.
CBD and your Pet
Like we have stated before, there is much research to be done regarding CBD in general and even more research that needs to be done surrounding pets and CBD. It is important to keep in mind that THC is something we have deemed toxic for animals. So, when looking at CBD for pets make sure the product is labeled THC free. We love our pets and we know you do too. Keeping them safe is our top priority and that is why our products go through a third-party testing to ensure their purity and potency.
