CBD for dogs who don’t like the taste

You may be thinking, cannabidiol (CBD)? For dogs? It is true! There has been a growth of popularity when it comes to dogs and holistic health products. Perhaps you have a dog that is picky on what it ingests or maybe your dog is extra sensitive to smell? We all know the “cover it in peanut butter” trick, but, what if that still does not work? There are many other things that one can do to soothe your dog’s nerves about taking something new. In this article we will first, explain why pet parents have started using CBD for their dogs, what products are available for animals and what CBD tastes like to you and your dog. And different ways to get your dog to take CBD. Let us begin with the basics.

CBD: What is it?

CBD is short of cannabidiol. This is one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. The Cannabis sativa plant is found in a variety of forms that have varying cannabinoid and terpene content. The best known sort is the marijuana plant that contains high concentrations of the psychoactive cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the component that gives users a ‘high’ or feeling of euphoria. This is an inebriating effect as well as the high amount of THC found in the plant are just a couple of the reasons why marijuana is not legal in all of the 50 states. However, quite a few states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes or for recreational purposes. The other important variation of the Cannabis sativa plant is the hemp plant. This plant contains high amounts of CBD and at or less than 0.3% of THC. Because of this, hemp derived CBD is available throughout the United States and is completely legal as of 2018. In the year 2018, the Farm Bill was passed, this bill allows farmers across the states to grow and sell the hemp plant. Because the percentage of THC is so low in the hemp plant there is no possibility of getting ‘high’ while using a CBD hemp derived product. Although you cannot get high from CBD there are other possible benefits available.

CBD for dogs? What?

That’s right, CBD is for dogs too! How could CBD possibly be beneficial for dogs? Here is a list of reasons we have researched or found that may be applicable to you and your furry friends.

Promote a sense of calm: In this study we looked at horses who were in need of feelings of calm and an overall increase in wellbeing. This was a short research that only lasted two weeks. The horses were given CBD twice daily and owners took a questionnaire each week. At the end of the study most horses showed signs of an increased overall wellbeing in the equine that were given CBD.

Joint health: Joint health is a great topic that should be looked at when looking toward CBD and your pets!  Panacea Life Sciences conducted our own research regarding this specific potential CBD benefit. We looked at dogs who had poor joint health. These dogs were watched for four consecutive weeks. They were given CBD twice daily and owners were given a questionnaire at the end of each week. In the end, we found out that CBD helped improve the joint health and increased the mobility of the subjects.

It is important to keep in mind that there are many different more topics that need to be researched when it comes to CBD in general. But there needs to be much more done surrounding CBD and your pet. Please speak to a veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet to make sure that it would be right for them.

CBD products for dogs

Now that you can see why others have chosen to use CBD for their pets. What type of CBD Is available to you? Here is a list of the products that we have here at Panacea Life Sciences.

FelinCBD relief cream: This is our first feline CBD product. Like all topicals, the CBD never reaches the bloodstream of your feline, but may have certain positive effects when applied to the skin. We suggest using this twice daily.

Equine CBD tablets: These tablets are chalk full of 50mg of CBD. These are easy to administer and come in a nice peppermint flavor. Some horses may respond to the CBD sooner than others but it is unlikely to take more than five days before seeing a reaction.

Canine tincture: Our canine tinctures are also formulated to be THC free products. These come in small breed, medium breed, and large breed concentrations for the perfect fit for your best friend. This product contains omegaand omega-6 fatty acids from fish oil as well as coconut oil. These can be easily administered directly into the jowls, added to water, or poured over food.

Canine softgel: These canine soft gels are full of our pure hemp oil. All of our pet CBD products are THC free. The soft gels are formed into a fish shaped soft gel so that the end of the gel is easily removed to administer the CBD into the jowls of the dog’s mouth (the recommended application). Our soft gels are formulated with fish oil and MCT from coconut oil to enhance the absorption rates.

Keep in mind that not all animals will react to CBD the same way as others. Always start with a small amount and then slowly increase until you have seen the results that you want.

What does CBD taste like?

So, you want to possibly improve your pet’s life with CBD? What does it taste like? Will they like it? CBD has been described as tasting “earthy” and this makes sense because it does come from a plant after all. Some dogs may not even notice the taste if you administer it directly into their jowls, but others may fight, so what are the options available? For dogs in particular it may be easiest to add the CBD into or on their favorite treat. That way the CBD is getting masked by a yummy taste.

Perhaps starting with a small amount of CBD and increasing it so that your animal gets used to the taste will work as well. There are many ways to mask the taste of CBD if your pet does not like it. Try different methods until one works or contact your veterinarian to see if they have suggestions that may be right for your pet.

What about pet’s owners

What about you? Can you use CBD? What are the reasons that people use CBD? CBD can assist humans the same way it may assist pets. AKA joint health as well as an overall wellbeing. Here is a list of the other reasons CBD is used for humans.

Antibacterial properties: In this study they concluded that CBD had the capability to kill certain types of bacteria. Therefore, CBD hand sanitizer was born. This is a great product to use that has less chemicals than normal hand sanitizer.

FDA approved medications: There are several FDA approved medications that contain CBD. There are a handful of medications that assist those going through anti-cancer treatments and the nausea it may cause. These are called Marinol (dronabinol), Syndros (dronabinol), and Cesamet (nabilone). These medications can only be prescribed by a healthcare professional. Epidiolex is the most well-known. This medication helps those with two severe types of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.

Promote a sense of calm: Promoting a sense of calm in those who have feelings of anxiousness is just the beginning of the potential CBD has. In this study, they used brain imaging to test subjects who have SAD (social anxiety disorder). Those who were given the CBD showed a decrease in their SAD via brain scans. Those who did not receive the CBD did not have any decrease. Another similar reason is for the anti-inflammatory or joint health benefits.

Skin health: CBD topicals never reach the bloodstream. However, this does not mean that they cannot assist in skin health. In this study they explain that those with and without skin conditions had improved skin health after the use of CBD topicals. They used several tests to test before and after the use of a CBD topical. Their evidence was enhanced by photographic evidence.

CBD products available for pet owners

There are several reasons to use CBD for humans and with that comes along several different ways to get CBD into your system. Here are some of them!

Vapes: Panacea Life Sciences does not advocate for the use of a CBD vape, but it is an option that you may want to be aware of. Once the CBD vape is inhaled the CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream. This is a fast way to get CBD but may have negative health effects on the lungs.

Topicals: CBD topicals different from the other types of CBD, as they do not reach the bloodstream. They, however, can give benefits from the pores on the surface of the skin. These are best used frequently and in the same area. They come in lotions, salves, creams, and even hand sanitizer.

Tincture: This type of CBD gets into the bloodstream quite fast. When the dropper full of CBD is placed in the mouth it is absorbed into the bloodstream from there. A tincture is an oil like substance that is added to carrier oil. Some tinctures come flavored to mask the earthy hemp taste. Although tinctures give the CBD effects quite quickly, they have been described to last not as long as other products.

Tablets: Tablets are more similar to tinctures. A tablet is placed in the mouth and dissolves there. It enters the bloodstream from the mouth as the tincture does. You can add or subtract amounts of CBD with a dropper, but tablets are made with the same concentration of CBD every time making it easier to know how much you are getting.

Soft gel: A soft gel is a capsule that is full of CBD (just like the dog version). Once the capsule is swallowed it goes through the digestive tract and then lands in the stomach. Once there the CBD is absorbed as the capsule is broken down.

Edibles: Edibles are similar to soft gels in the way that they are absorbed into the bloodstream. Once you have chewed and swallowed the edible (we have cherry flavored gummies) it will travel to the stomach where it is broken down. Once broken down the CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream by the stomach lining.

With all of these options there is a high possibility that one could work for you. Just like using CBD with your pet it is important to speak to your health care provider before taking CBD. As always, start with a small amount and slowly increase until you feel like you have the correct amount for you!

How Does CBD Sanitizer Ward Off Germs?

This time of social distancing, in order to slow the spread of coronavirus, has been tough for most of us to deal with. We have all encountered difficult situations reminding us that life isn’t how it normally is. Whether you are an essential worker overwhelmed by work or just a shopper who had to stop by multiple grocery stores just to find that each one was out of stock of basic essentials like toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, hand sanitizer, and other cleaning products. Never before has hand sanitizer seemed so rare or so expensive!

Hand sanitizer is in high demand, but it’s still necessary to leave home and risk exposure for essential grocery shopping, work, or errands. But which hand sanitizer ingredients work? If you’re looking for tips on cleaning and natural products proven to work, try Cannabidiol (CBD)

Here’s what makes CBD stand out among healing plants and a few ways CBD hand sanitizer will help you ward off germs.

What is CBD and Why Do People Love It?

You may generally know what hand sanitizer is made of, but what is CBD and why should it be added to the mix? The non-psychoactive CBD is just one of many different cannabinoids within the Cannabis sativa plant. THC is typically the more well-known cannabinoid due to its ability to produce a high feeling, but CBD is different in that it will not make you feel those psychoactive effects.

CBD has many health and wellness benefits that have encouraged a boom in CBD-related products in the last several years. CBD is wonderful for promoting a general feeling of calm. It will clear your anxious mind and allow you to enjoy the present moment. CBD is also an effective pain reliever and has anti-inflammatory effects. You can learn more about the bioavailability of CBD in various products in this articleCBD even kills bacteria. The benefits are seemingly endless.

Studies Prove That Marijuana is Antibacterial

It’s true — much of the Cannabis sativa plant is excellent for warding off germs, and science proves it. In one study, researchers looked at delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) for effects on staphylococci and streptococci growth. The study found that both compounds are actually antibacterial. The researchers wrote, “In the same range, both compounds are also bactericidal. In media containing 4% serum or 5% blood the antibacterial activity is strongly reduced (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (the concentration that a compound stops bacterial growth) MIC 50 mug/ml). Gram-negative bacteria are resistant to THC and CBD.”

Another study published in 2008 showed the antibacterial activity of different cannabinoids. The researchers wrote, “All five major cannabinoids (cannabidiol (1b), cannabichromene (2), cannabigerol (3b), Delta (9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (4b), and cannabinol (5)) showed potent activity against a variety of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains of current clinical relevance.” That means CBD is a great choice to use in sanitizer, but other cannabinoids hold promise, too.

In a 2019 study, researchers tested CBD against a wide variety of bacteria and some strains of staphylococcus. They compared how effective CBD was compared to common antibiotics, such as vancomycin and daptomycin. “We looked at how quickly the CBD killed the bacteria. It’s quite fast, within 3 hours, which is pretty good. Vancomycin (Vancocin) kills over 6 to 8 hours,” said Mark Blaskovich, PhD, senior research officer at the Centre for Superbug Solutions at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland in Australia. He also noted that while looking for CBD’s ability to kill bacteria, that “In every case, CBD had a very similar potency to that of common antibiotics.” The study is promising for the hope that CBD could fight some infections.

New Companies Produce CBD Hand Sanitizer

Within the scientific research community, marijuana has actually been known to contain antibacterial cannabinoids for quite a while. However, experts note that we have not yet investigated the Cannabis sativa plant’s full potential to address antibiotic resistance. We are excited to produce another high-quality CBD product in an effort to help prevent the spread of illnesses.

How to Make Your Own CBD Hand Sanitizer

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using 60% ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, and 70% isopropanol, as active ingredients in hand sanitizers. Now, as life has changed and items like hand sanitizer are not so easy to come by, try getting creative and make your own CBD sanitizer! You can make some just for your hands, or you can try making an all-purpose cleaner or other item, too. The list is practically endless of things you can make with CBD. Here is a recipe for basic DIY hand sanitizer from Is CBD for Me.com:

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol 99%
  • 1/3 cup aloe Vera gel
  • 10 drops High-quality grade THC-free CBD oil or tincture
  • 10 drops Tea Tree essential oil

Equipment:

  • Bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Wooden spoon
  • Clean funnel
  • Clean bottle with leak-proof top or screw top

Instructions:

  • Using a measuring cup, add the 99% rubbing alcohol to a mixing bowl, followed by the aloe Vera gel.
  • Stir well.
  • Mix the CBD oil or tincture with the essential oil(s), stir until combined.
  • Add the oil mixture to the alcohol and aloe Vera mixture and combine it.
  • Pour into clean bottles and label. Keep out of reach of children.

These are tough times we are living in. We see some people panic buying all of the supplies and shelves are empty of basic items. Are you having trouble finding sanitizer? Consider going to a CBD company to find your stash if you can’t find any at the grocery store.

Best uses for pure CBD oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a big product these days. You have likely seen it around before, as it is in many stores and pharmacies. But what exactly is it? And what could it be used for?

A quick definition of CBD oil

We cannot talk about the use of CBD without explaining what it is first. After all, in order to use something properly, you will need to have a good idea of what exactly it is and where it comes from.

CBD is a member of a class of chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. They are found in cannabis plants, like hemp and marijuana. It is a very diverse group of compounds, with over 113 different ones that have been found so far. CBD is one of the more popular cannabinoids, but there is one that is arguably more famous.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the best-known cannabinoid. It is so famous because of its psychoactive effects. That means that it creates the inebriation, more commonly referred to as a “high,” that is so often associated with cannabis plants. Because they are both cannabinoids, many believe that CBD and THC are the same, and that they both will get you high. However, this is a misguided line of thought. CBD, unlike THC, is not psychoactive at all. It does not create the same high that THC does.

CBD is usually extracted from hemp rather than marijuana. Much like the confusion with THC and CBD, many people assume that marijuana and hemp are different words for the same thing. But that is not the case. While they are both cannabis plants, hemp and marijuana are different variations of cannabis. Hemp is attractive to CBD manufacturers because it has low levels of THC and high levels of CBD. Marijuana is just about the exact opposite. It has high levels of THC and varying levels of CBD. Most CBD product manufacturers also use hemp over marijuana because it is federally legal in the United States. As of 2018, hemp is legal to grow and sell across the country (within restrictions in certain states). Marijuana, on the other hand, is still federally illegal. There are a handful of states that have legalized the cannabis variation, some only for medicinal purposes and others for recreational uses.

To get a bit more specific within this definition, let’s talk about CBD oil. It is a kind of CBD product, where CBD extract is mixed with a carrier oil, like coconut oil. It is one of the more common forms that you will find CBD products in. They are easy to take, and you have a couple of different options on how to take them. The first is by mixing them in with some food, like a smoothie. Most CBD oils have some sort of flavoring in them, so you do not need to worry about them having a strong hemp flavor. The one downside of taking CBD oil like this is that you need to wait for the food to digest before the CBD can start working. Another way of taking CBD oil is by placing the oil drops directly into your mouth. This is faster, because you do not have to wait for food or drink to digest.

How to find pure CBD oil

It is perfectly possible to get your hands on CBD products that have no other cannabinoids or compounds other than CBD. But to do that, you do need to pay attention to the label. There are three main kinds of CBD extract. Every product is made with one of these. They are full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate. You can probably deduce which of these is the purest version of the extract, but let’s talk about the others anyway. You may decide that there is a different one that you would like better.

Full spectrum

When CBD is extracted from the hemp, there are other compounds and cannabinoids that come with it. Full spectrum CBD keeps all of these in the extract. This includes THC. However, as stated above, it legally cannot be more than 0.3%, which is not enough to cause a high. Despite the presences of these other cannabinoids and compounds, CBD is still the primary part of the extract and is what you will feel the strongest effect from.

Broad spectrum

Broad spectrum is very similar to full spectrum. It has most of the other compounds and cannabinoids that come with the CBD during extraction. However, there is one important distinction, there is no THC. The appeal of full and broad spectrums is a potential effect known as the entourage effect. This is when compounds build on each other to create a stronger effect. Broad spectrum could be a good option for those who are looking for a stronger effect, without the concern of the presence of THC.

CBD isolate

You have probably already guessed what CBD isolate is. It is CBD extract with nothing in it, but the CBD. If you are looking for pure CBD oil, this is what you are going to want to look for. Products made from CBD isolate may not be as strong as full or broad spectrums, but they may be able to provide you with a clearer CBD experience.

When shopping for CBD products, be sure to pay attention to the labels. They should say what kind of CBD extract was used in the production. The products that are made with pure CBD should say something along the lines of “CBD isolate,” or “isolate.” But if you are curious, the other extracts are also worth trying.

What uses are there for CBD?

There has been a fair amount of research that has been done on CBD, leading to us having an idea of what benefits it may offer. But what exactly are these benefits, and what research backs it up? Well, let’s talk about it.

Help with achieving a sense of calm

Despite CBD not being psychoactive, it is known for having one specific effect on someone’s mental state. It may be able to help its user achieve a greater sense of calm. This study tested that by having several people with social anxiety disorder participate in public speaking. Some of them were give CBD and other were given a placebo. Those that were given the CBD reported feeling much more confident and comfortable when facing the nerve-wracking activity, than those who were given the placebo. This study, and others, strongly suggest that CBD could help many people who struggle with feelings of anxiousness.

Supporting joint health

Another common area that CBD researchers are interested in, is how CBD interacts with things like inflammation, that have a negative impact on joint health. For example, this study wanted to see how CBD interacted with inflammation caused by oxidative stress. This form of inflammation contributes to many issues, like diabetes, Alzheimer disease, and several forms of arthritis, for example. The researchers found that CBD was able to help reduce the inflammation. This could mean that CBD could help deal with inflammation and support joint health.

There are plenty of areas concerning CBD that need more research done. But the two benefits listed above have had a lot of research focused on them. They are just a couple of examples of the many things that CBD may be able to help with. As time goes on, we are likely to learn about even more.

What other CBD products are out there?

So, now you have an idea of what CBD and CBD oil is and what it may be able to offer you. But what if you do not want CBD in oil form? Well, there is an easy remedy for that: one of the many other CBD products that are out there. Let’s talk about what those products are.

Edibles

You can probably guess what these are. They are any food or drink that has been made with CBD. They are very popular because they are easy to take and delicious. The CBD in edibles does, however, take a while to start working, because the food or drink needs to digest before it can start working. But their effect does tend to last a long time. So, there is some give and take with these.

Capsules & tablets

If you are looking for a more pill-like CBD product, then these are what you are going to want to keep an eye out for. Capsules are the most pill-like of the two. They are normally soft gels, which means that they have been made with liquid CBD extract. You take them like you would any other pill, swallowing them without chewing. Tablets are a little bit different. Most CBD tablets are sublingual, which means that to take them, you place them under your tongue and allow them to dissolve. They tend to start working a bit faster because the skin under your tongue is thin, making it easy for the CBD to absorb into your system.

FDA-approved medications

Because of all of the research that has been done on CBD so far, there are a few CBD-based medications that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The big one is Epidiolex. It is aimed at helping avoid the seizures that are caused by two serious forms of epilepsy, Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes. The others are all made to help fight the nausea that is common with cancer treatments.

Topicals

These kinds of CBD products include anything that you use on your skin that is made with CBD. They could be lotions, creams, balms, and hand sanitizers, among many other products. Unlike their oral counterparts, the CBD in topicals never enter the bloodstream. Instead the CBD absorbs through the pores. This way you still get the benefits of CBD, but it stays in the area that the topical is used. They work best if you use them often and liberally.

How do I know how much CBD to take?

Unfortunately, you cannot know, not initially. This is because everyone has a different experience with CBD. There are some connecting factors (weight, age, genetics), but they are not a guarantee. So, in order to know the right amount of CBD for you, you will need to experiment a little. But you need to do that carefully. Before we can talk about how to experiment with it carefully, we need to talk about what to look out for when taking CBD.

In general, CBD is considered safe for anyone who is over the age of 18 and is not pregnant or breastfeeding. But that does not mean that it is free of side effects. The side effects that are associated with the cannabinoid are usually connected with taking too much of it. They tend to be along the lines of things like nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. While these are not normally life threatening, they are still no fun to deal with. You should do your best to avoid them. But how do you do that?

The best way to figure out the right amount of CBD for you is by starting out low with how much you take. Most CBD products have a suggested amount on the label. This is usually on the lower side. You can either follow that or try to go even lower (if possible). Once you take that amount, you should wait and see how it sits with you. Remember that some products take longer than others to start working. If after a while, you do not feel any negative side effects, but still are not getting the effect you are looking for, you can try taking more CBD. This process could take several days, so be patient.

It is also important that you bear in mind that CBD does not work well with all medications. That is, not all medications work right in the presence of CBD. Some do not work as strongly, other do not work at all. If you take medication and would like to start taking CBD as well, be sure to discuss it with a healthcare professional. They should know how the cannabinoid interacts with your medication.

There are many things that CBD oil has the potential to help with. The main way to know how it may benefit you is to give it a try. Then you can see what everyone’s favorite cannabinoid may be able to do for you.

PANACEA LIFE SCIENCES CANNABIDIOL ORAL SOLUTION

Medical marijuana is increasingly being utilized as a holistic treatment for a variety of conditions.  While research has been inhibited by the legal status of compounds derived from the cannabis plant, newer scientific and clinical studies are demonstrating efficacy correlating to anecdotal evidence.  There are a dramatic number of fewer prescriptions being written per physician in states where medical marijuana is legalized when compared to states where the plant is illegal.  Interestingly, the major conditions where marijuana is being utilized are in areas where there are not efficacious pharmaceutical treatments.

Cannabidiol, one of the major cannabinoids found in the industrial hemp plant, has been reported to positively affect a wide range of physiological functions.   This non-psychoactive cannabinoid exerts its primary activity as a Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID).  PANAPure CBD by Panacea Life Sciences and others has demonstrated that CBD is a very good alternative for alleviating pain, demonstrating 40X higher potency than ibuprofen without the addiction potential or other side effects reported for stronger medications such as opiates or gabapentin medications.  CBD has also been reported to promote a sense of calm and is being explored as an efficacious anxiolytic and for acute depression [reference].  Equally interesting is that CBD is very well tolerated with minor side effects reported only at extremely high concentrations (>10 mg/kg/day).

The large number of physiological effects attributed to CBD can be explained by interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).   While the ECS was discovered a mere 30 years ago, and initially thought to consist only of the cannabinoid 1 and cannabinoid 2 receptors, is now described to consist of over 70 molecular targets that bind to cannabinoids to mediate effects.  The collection of molecular targets began to explain how CBD may be an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anxiolytic, and may provide an alternative to address unmet medical needs without side effects.  The role of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis in the body to help stimulate or augment underactive physiological pathways or to help dampen responses for overactive pathways.

Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid designated chemically as 2-[(1R,6R)-3-Methyl-6-(1-methylethenyl)-2cyclohexen-1-yl]-5-pentyl-1,3-benzenediol (IUPAC/CAS). Its empirical formula is C21H30O2 and its molecular weight is 314.46. The chemical structure is:

Panacea Life Sciences
Cannabidiol, the active ingredient in Panacea Life Sciences Cannabidiol Oral Solution and EPIDIOLEX, is a cannabinoid that naturally occurs in the
Cannabis sativa L. plant.  Cannabidiol is a white to pale yellow crystalline solid. It is insoluble in water and is soluble in organic solvents.

Founded in 2017, Panacea Life Sciences was founded to purposely formulate cannabinoids for patients in need and to provide improved scientific/medical knowledge on the benefits of cannabinoid therapy.   The hemp industry has been unreliable at best with over 50% of current products available to consumers failing potency and purity quality control checks [reference].  From the first day of operation PLS has instituted unmatched quality processes in supply chain and manufacturing.  PLS is completely vertically integrated meaning that the entire process from hemp seed to finished product are owned and controlled by PLS.  Our 250 acre farm located in Western Colorado allow PLS to control the quality of industrial hemp used for production as well as access to unique genetics that will be the basis for a next generation of cannabinoid medications.  Our 51,000 square foot cGMP facility located in Golden, Colorado focuses on plant extraction, formulation and manufacturing of over 30 products.  Manufacturing is quality controlled with extensive testing to ensure that every PLS product will meet or exceed potency and purity standards.

PLS is also committed to advancing cannabinoid science.  Leslie Buttorff, Panacea’s CEO, recently donated $1.5M to Colorado State University to fund the CSU Cannabinoid Research Center.  This center will serve as the foundation to study various cannabinoids and will expand into various areas of biological research including plant genetics, agronomy, molecular mechanisms of cannabinoid action, as well as animal and human clinical trials.  In parallel to CSU research, Panacea has initiated two animal clinical studies to evaluate effects on pain and anxiety in dogs and horses.  PLS has launched initiatives to evaluate understanding of cannabinoid activities through scientific collaborations with academic and industrial institutions, as well as Panacea-directed efforts to evaluate the molecular pharmacology of cannabinoids, effects on specific inflammatory pathways, unique anti-infective activities, and determination of anti-tumor activity with linkages of activity to biomarkers associated with tumorgenicity.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body. An object that penetrates brain tissue, such as a bullet or shattered piece of skull, also can cause traumatic brain injury.  Civilian TBI is typically mild that affects brain cells temporarily that often resolves over a three-month period with focus on rest and possible cognitive therapy.  Veterans typically experience moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries, with more extreme conditions that include persistent headache pain, seizures, confusion, mood swings, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and social isolation amongst a number of other symptoms.  TBI patients are also have an increased risk of developing additional neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia pugilistica.

Current treatments for TBI, aside from initial stabilization, are insufficient to specifically assist patients to recover from injury and focus on rehabilitation.  A majority of treatment consists of various counseling and psychotherapies.  For patients experiencing seizures, anti-seizure medications may be prescribed to control severity and incidence of seizure occurrence.

Over 35% of those with TBI will also suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  PTSD is a mental health condition that results from being exposed to a traumatic event.  Patients with TBI and PTSD will present with an additional severity of mental issues including anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, memory issues, and social avoidance.  Typical treatment for PTSD involved counseling as well as medications to lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Cannabidiol Oral Solution as a potential alternative treatment for TBI and PTSD?

Recent research has demonstrated that Cannabidiol Oral Solution may be an alternative approach to accelerating healing of the injuries associated with TBI and PTSD (reviewed in LD Schurman and AH Lichtman, Frontiers in Pharmacology 2017 v 8 p 69, online publication; and L Elms J Altern Complement Med 2019 v 4 pp 392-397, respectively).  Although CBD, as mentioned above is a potent anti-inflammatory, this compound also exerts neuroprotective activity through various molecular targets including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine receptors and transporters.   Preclinical research demonstrating CBD efficacy in treating TBI and PTSD have showed promise which has led to two clinical trials to evaluate CBD in TBI (recruiting) and 4 studies to evaluate cannabidiol or marijuana in PTSD patients (including whether CBD will decrease alcohol use disorder).

The best understood and researched activity of CBD is on seizure disorders.  There have been over 40 clinical studies evaluating the ability of CBD to lessen the severity and occurrence of seizures with a focus on Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet’s syndrome which are genetic epileptic conditions that cannot be controlled with currently available antiepileptic drugs.  GW Pharma has pioneered the development of an FDA approved CBD medication called Epidiolex.

Based on the current research, both preclinical and clinical, CBD holds great promise to alleviate symptoms and possibly treat complex conditions such as TBI and PTSD.

About Epidiolex

Epidiolex, manufactured by GW Pharma, was approved by the FDA September of last year for the treatment of  seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) or Dravet Syndrome (DS) in patients 2 years of age or older.  This medication is a schedule V drug, and as such a prescription is currently required.  Although Epidiolex is not approved for conditions other than seizures in these orphan conditions GW Pharma is sponsoring research for off-label prescriptions that would include drug-resistant epilepsy and other seizure disorders.

EPIDIOLEX, cannabidiol oral solution, is a clear, colorless to yellow liquid containing cannabidiol at a concentration of 100 mg/mL. Inactive ingredients include dehydrated alcohol, sesame seed oil, strawberry flavor, and sucralose as sweetener to offset the slightly bitter taste of CBD. EPIDIOLEX contains no ingredient made from a gluten-containing grain (wheat, barley, or rye).

Epidiolex is simple liquid oral formulation consisting of 100mg/ml pure CBD, dehydrated alcohol, sesame seed oil, strawberry flavor and sucralose.

Two randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled clinical studies on Epidiolex efficacy in LGS patients demonstrated a significant decrease in seizure reduction (approximately 40% reduction compared to a 16% reduction in placebo groups) at CBD doses of up to 20 mg/kg/day.  Since these patients have severe seizures and are resistant to pharmacotherapy, these results provide a novel approach to those suffering from these two syndromes.  Common questions regarding Epidiolex for patients and caregivers is reviewed in R Abu-Sawwa and C Tehling in J Pediatr Ther 2020 v 1 pp.75-77.

There are dose-relate side effects when CBD is taken chronically at doses in excess of 10 mg/kg/day that include excessive sleepiness, decreased appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, transaminase elevation, fatigue, malaise, rash, insomnia, sleep disorder, poor quality sleep, and infections.  The transaminase elevation and possible liver damage should be monitored throughout treatment to ensure the continued health of the patient.

Prior to taking Epidiolex, serum transaminases (ALT and AST) and total bilirubin levels should be measured and regularly monitored throughout treatment. Epidiolex has the following contraindications and drug interactions:

Marketing

Epidiolex is an expensive drug that will cost patients approximately $32,000 annually.  It is unknown at this time whether insurance carriers or Medicare will cover this medication.  The pricing is driven by the drug approval pathway and the limited number of patients.

While FDA approved generic medications are in development, it is not expected that these generic equivalents will enter the market until 2025. Generic equivalents of Epidiolex are anticipated to reduce costs to approximately $6,400 per patient annually.

Tilray 2:100 Tincture: Comparable Product and Results to Epidiolex

Tilray’s 2:100 (THC:CBD) oral solution is a comparable product to Epidiolex. While not a generic drug, it is essentially the same formulation: 100 mg/mL Cannabidiol solution with Sesame Oil, Alcohol, Strawberry Flavor, and Sucralose. This medication is only currently available to medical marijuana patients in Canada.  Tilray has not conducted their own clinical trials or research to support the efficacy of their product for the disorders treated with Epidiolex. Furthermore, they do not make any medical claims about the product.  Tilray has provided their 2:100 tincture for use in clinical trials in children with Dravet Syndrome; however, these studies pre-date FDA approval of Epidiolex. They have also provided CBD to American universities for several other studies, including:

Panacea’s Cannabinoid Oral Solution Tinctures

Panacea Life Sciences currently manufactures a variety of products, including tinctures, containing various concentrations and preparations of CBD.  Since Epidiolex is an extremely simple formula, Panacea has formulated and manufactured a Cannabinoid Oral Solution tincture similar to Epidiolex that is available to consumers at a fraction of the cost.  Panacea manufactures and markets these products as dietary supplements with strict quality control so ensure potency and purity requirements are met with each batch produced.

This approach allows Panacea to meet its mission with providing affordable and needed CBD products to consumers with unmet medical needs.

CBD for dogs: Make your best friend happy

All we ever really want for our pets is to be happy, right? They don’t call dogs “man’s best friend” for nothing! Although there is a communication barrier between us, we can almost sense when something is not right with our furry friends. And if you are like us, you will do whatever it takes to make them happy and comfortable again. Perhaps you are also like us in the way of looking for more holistic ways to help your pets. Medication can cause negative effects and who knows if that will be the best option to take care of your dog, cat, or, even, horse! But, CBD (cannabidiol)? Isn’t that weed? How could that be good for your pet? Let us explain! There are many things that have been misconstrued surrounding CBD and what it does for you as well as your animal. Let us start from the beginning!

CBD? Isn’t that weed?

Short answer, no. CBD is not weed, or at least the weed you are likely thinking of. CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. The cannabis plant comes in a variety of variations. The plant that you are most likely to think of when you hear weed or cannabis is the marijuana plant. The marijuana plant has a high percentage of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the component that you have possibly been confusing with CBD. Although the two cannabinoids are found together, they are different things.

THC is the cannabinoid that gives users a ‘high’ or feeling of euphoria when used. THC containing products are not legal in all 50 states because of the potential for mental impairment or inebriation. The marijuana plant contains high percentages of THC and low percentages of CBD. The variation of the Cannabis sativa plant that is called the hemp plant, however, has very high percentages of CBD and at or lower than .3% of THC. This percentage of THC does not have the ability to get one ‘high’. This is why in 2018 the Farm Bill was passed. This bill allows farmers across the country to grow and sell the hemp plant. There are states that have legalized the growth and use of the marijuana plant but remains federally illegal. So, make sure you know the laws in your state! Can CBD get you ‘high’?  No, it cannot. But it does have the potential to assist in increasing your overall wellbeing (and your furry friend’s wellbeing).

CBD … for dogs?

Yes, it is true! There are several products and uses that are geared towards dogs specifically. But what are they? Is it safe? These are great questions that we will answer. Perhaps you already know the reasons that people use CBD, but why give CBD to your pet? They are practically the same reason you would use CBD.

Sense of Calm: Having a happy pet is all we ever want (at least for us). Perhaps your animal is a rescue that didn’t have a great upbringing and they often feel feelings of anxiousness. That is where CBD comes in. In this study, we looked at horses that had feelings of anxiousness and chronic discomfort. These horses were given 50 milligrams of CBD two times a day for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks the results and demonstrated CBD was helpful for the horses who had chronic discomfort and trended to lessen anxiety-related behaviors. This is useful information and although it is studied with  household pets, it is still promising.

Joint Health: Older dogs and other household pets are often seen with joint health issues. That is just the way of life and with animals as active as dogs it’s almost a given. What can we do as pet owners to ease joint issues? CBD, maybe? In this study, we looked at dogs with mobility issues. We asked these pet owners to give their dogs CBD twice a day for four consecutive weeks. One milligram was administered for each 5 kilograms of body weight to ensure the animal was getting the proper amount for its size. This is an important aspect when giving animals (and humans) CBD. The owners also took an online weekly assessment and before and after videos were taken of dogs doing certain movements to see the results. After the four weeks, we found that all of the measures of mobility had significantly improved. The dogs in the study had increased mobility and their joint health was improved.

These are only two specific studies and reasons do give your best friend CBD. There may be many more reasons in the years to come. As popularity over CBD increases, the more research is being performed. And that is exactly what we need! Now that we understand a few of the reasons that one would give CBD to their pets, what products are available?

CBD products for “man’s best friend”

There are fewer CBD products for animals as there are for humans, but we see more arising in the future as more research is done. As a rule of thumb, make sure to ask your veterinarian about giving CBD to your animals before doing so. Here is a list of products that we, here at Panacea Life Sciences, have available and a short description of how they work:

Equine CBD Tablets: These are specially formulated for horses. These contain 50mg of THC free CBD. Tablets dissolve in the mouth and are easy to administer. Each bottle contains 30 tablets. A monthly subscription is available as well.

Feline CBD Relief Cream: This product is made to put in the inside of a feline’s ears to provide the many reported health improvements provided by CBD. Like the rest of Panacea’s pet products, this is also a THC free product.

Canine CBD Softgels: These soft gels are full of 5 mg of THC free CBD as well as fish oil for a range of health benefits. These soft gels are shaped like a fish with an easy twist off end for easy administration into the jowl. Or you can add these to your dog’s food. There are different options available that are tailored to different sized dogs.

Canine CBD Tincture: Our CBD tincture comes in a variety of different milligrams for different sizes of dogs. This is also a THC free product that can be diluted in water, added to food, or administered directly to the mouth.

Note that all of our CBD pet products contain no THC. This is because THC has been reported harmful for animals.

What about CBD for people? Why is CBD used?

Besides using CBD for promoting a sense of calm and joint health, which are used for humans as well, what else is there?

Medication: There are several FDA approved medications that contain CBD. Epidiolex is the most well-known. This medication helps those with two severe types of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. There are also a handful of others that assist those going through anti-cancer treatments and the nausea it may cause. These are called Marinol (dronabinol), Syndros (dronabinol), and Cesamet (nabilone). These medications can only be prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Skin health: CBD topicals typically do not reach the bloodstream. However, this does not mean that they cannot assist in skin health. In this study they explain that those with and without skin conditions had improved skin health after the use of CBD topicals. They used several tests to test before and after the use of a CBD topical. Their evidence was enhanced by photographic evidence.

Anti-bacterial: There have been research surrounding the potential antibacterial properties of CBD.  In this study they concluded that CBD had the capability to kill certain types of bacteria. Which is one of the reasons CBD companies, like us, have started to make CBD hand sanitizer.

These are just some of the reasons why CBD has been used for humans. Along with research that needs to be done for pets, equal needs to be done for humans. Always speak to a health care professional before starting the use of CBD for yourself as well.

CBD products for people

Now that we understand other uses that people use CBD, what products are available for them?

Edibles: Edibles are a fun and easy way to get CBD into your daily routine. But instead of swallowing a capsule (see below), edibles come in a variety of different yummy types. We sell Cherry Bomb gummies. Like soft gels, after swallowing the edible breaks down in the stomach and the CBD is absorbed from there.

Soft gels: Soft gel CBD is a great way to get CBD into your routine. Our soft capsules are taken like any type of pill. Swallow and go! The capsule is full of CBD. Once it reaches the stomach through the digestive tract it breaks down and is absorbed into the bloodstream from the stomach. These take a bit longer to feel but, some have described to last a bit longer.

Tablets: This type of CBD is very easy to use. You just place it in your mouth, let it dissolve and you are done! After being dissolved the CBD reaches the bloodstream through the mouth. This is a very quick way to get CBD into your bloodstream. Our CBD tablets come in 25 mg and 50 mg (FAST, and FAST EXTRA, respectively). We also provide equine tablets as well.

Tinctures: The way that a tincture gets into the bloodstream is similar to the way a tablet does. But, instead of a dissolvable tablet a tincture is an oil like substance. With the dropper, place the wanted amount of CBD into the mouth and let it sit there until dissolved. This also gets in the bloodstream quickly.

Topicals: CBD topicals never reach the bloodstream but may provide benefits through the pores of the skin. These topicals come in salves, creams, and lotions. They are best used when applied liberally and often (try morning and evening). There are also bacteria killing CBD hand sanitizer as well and CBD cleansing hand creme available.

Vapes: Panacea Life Sciences does not sell CBD vapes nor do we advocate for the use of them. With that being said it is important to understand them. After the CBD is inhaled it is absorbed through the lungs and then on into the bloodstream. This works quickly but can have negative effects for the lungs.

It is important to note that not all CBD is created equal. Make sure to do your research on what kind of CBD you may want and where a company’s CBD comes from. There are many options and understand these options will help you and your pet greatly along your CBD journey.

One thing you may want to consider what spectrum of CBD you want. Here are a few options:

Full spectrum: What is full spectrum CBD? Like stated earlier in the article, the Cannabis sativa plant contains 113 cannabinoids and CBD is just one of them. A full spectrum CBD product contains the entire spectrum of the cannabinoids. This includes the small 0.3% of THC as well. However, this amount of THC is legal and cannot get a user the ‘high’. So, if you are looking for a product that will give you all the cannabinoids, look for the label of a full spectrum product.

Broad spectrum: Broad spectrum CBD is similar to full spectrum. But instead of having all of the cannabinoids the THC cannabinoid is extracted out. Therefore, give you the entire spectrum without the 0.3% of THC.

Isolate: Now, what is an Isolate? It is pretty self-explanatory; a CBD isolate is an isolated CBD. In this process all other cannabinoids are extracted out leaving only the CBD. If you only want to experience the potential benefits of CBD look for an isolate.

Make your best friend happy

Our pets are just a part of our lives, but to them, we are their whole lives. Let us treat them with the best care possible. It is important to first ask your veterinarian if CBD is right for your dog and then, when starting out, start with a small amount of CBD and then slowly increase until you feel that your animal is feeling its best. The same goes for you! Ask your healthcare provider if CBD would be a great additive to your daily routine. And like animals, start with a low amount and slowly increase. There are many medications that one could take to ease these life discomforts, but it is nice to know that there are more holistic options for you and your furry friends. As always, feel free to contact us for more information or questions that you may have at [email protected]

How is pure CBD oil better?

If you are curious about the world of cannabidiol (CBD), you have probably heard much talk about the benefits of pure CBD over other kinds of CBD. It has probably left you wondering what the difference is, and if pure CBD really is all that much better. Well, here at Panacea Life Sciences, we are all about make sure that people understand everything there is to know about CBD. So, let’s talk about what makes a CBD oil pure and whether or not it is better than other kinds.

A quick definition of CBD

We should probably cover what CBD even is before we can dive into the different kinds. Afterall, a base layer of knowledge is always a good thing to have.

CBD is a chemical compound that is found in cannabis plants like hemp and marijuana. It is classified as a specific kind of chemical compound known as a cannabinoid. There are over 113 different cannabinoids found in cannabis plants and there are still more to be found, classified, and named. While CBD is definitely one of the most well-known cannabinoids, there is one that is even more famous. That would be tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

It is likely that you had heard of THC before you had ever heard of CBD. This is because THC is the cannabinoid that is psychoactive. That means that it causes the inebriation (more normally referred to as a “high”) that so commonly associated with cannabis plants.

Because they are both cannabinoids and both found in cannabis plants, CBD and THC are often thought to be very similar if not exactly the same. However, this is not true. CBD and THC have very different effects in the body. One of the starkest differences is that CBD is not psychoactive. It does not create any sort of high or inebriation, instead may help you achieve a greater sense of calm.

CBD is normally extracted from the hemp variation of cannabis, rather than marijuana. It is easy to think that hemp and marijuana are actually the same plants, but they are actually different kinds of cannabis. The differences between them lie primarily in their concentrations of CBD and THC. Marijuana has high levels of THC and lower levels of CBD. Hemp is the opposite, with high levels of CBD and a concentration of less than 0.3% of THC. This ratio makes the extraction of CBD much easier in hemp than in marijuana.

This difference between hemp and marijuana has also helped determine the legal status of the two plants. Hemp was legalized in the United States in 2018 as a result of that year’s Farm Bill. This bill determines what farmers in the country can or cannot grow and sell. in 2018 the bill included a provision that officially legalized hemp because of its low THC content. However, marijuana is still federally illegal. A handful of states have legalized it on some level (some only medically, others recreationally).

There has been much research done on the potential benefits that CBD offers. For example, this study found that CBD could help those facing a stressful situation go into with a greater sense of calm. Another study found that CBD was greatly able to help reduce inflammation caused by oxidative stress. This study looked at CBD’s effect on acne and found it was able to stem the production of acne-causing oils. These are just a few examples. Research on CBD and its effects is ongoing and growing. There is still a lot about the cannabinoid that we are learning.

There is another piece of information that is important to know. It is that there is more than one kind of CBD extract. Some of the kinds are purer than others. Let’s talk about what they are.

What different kinds of CBD are there?

CBD extract does not just come in only one version. There are three different kinds of the extract. One of which may be considered pure. But before we can talk about it, we should go over what makes each of them pure or not.

Full spectrum

When CBD is extracted from the hemp, other compounds and cannabinoids often come with it. When all of these other cannabinoids and compounds are left in the extract when it is used in a product, it is known a full spectrum CBD product. These products also include some THC. As discussed above, it is not more than 0.3% THC, which is not enough to cause a high in anyone.

Broad spectrum

Despite the fact that the THC in full spectrum CBD is not enough to make anyone high, it is still enough to turn some people away from the product. That is where broad spectrum comes in. It is like full spectrum, in that most of the other compounds and cannabinoids that come with the CBD during extraction are left in the extract. But there is one very important distinction, there is no THC. The THC is completely filtered out, leaving CBD and the other compounds.

CBD isolate

This is the form of CBD extract that may be considered pure. It is CBD without any of the other cannabinoids. Everything else that may have come with the CBD in the extraction process is filtered out, leaving only the CBD. It has no THC, no other compounds, and no other cannabinoids.

You should be able to find any CBD product made with which ever version of CBD extract that you prefer.

Is pure CBD better?

When it comes down to it, whether or not CBD isolate is better depends on what sort of effect you are looking for. CBD products that are made with full or broad spectrums may be able to offer what is known as the entourage effect. This is when multiple compounds build on each other to create a stronger effect.

This may be an appeal for some. However, others may not like the fact the other cannabinoids and compounds may cloud the CBD experience. CBD isolate may be able to give the user a clearer CBD experience without the potential effects of other cannabinoids.

You should note that because of the lack of the entourage effect, this may mean that some people need to take more to feel an effect from the CBD. This should not be a problem, as long as you are careful and keep track of how much you take.

So, when deciding what kind of CBD to get you need to decide whether or not you would be comfortable with the presence of other cannabinoids, whether or not they are worth the stronger effect.

Different kinds of CBD products

Now that you have a better understanding of what the different kinds of CBD extracts have to offer, let’s talk about what the products that they are made into, so that you can find the right one for you.

Topicals

CBD topicals include any sort of product that you rub onto your skin instead of taking orally like most CBD products. They tend to be things like lotions, salves, cremes, and, more recently, hand sanitizers. Topicals are not likely to give you the overall effect that oral products tend to offer. This is because the CBD in these products never enters the bloodstream. The effect is very localized and stays where the topical is applied. These work best when used often and liberally.

Oils & tinctures

CBD oils and tinctures are one the more common CBD products that you will find. These are CBD extract that has been mixed with some sort of carrier oil, like palm oil for example. You can take tinctures and oils by placing a drop directly under your tongue. This allows the CBD to enter the bloodstream through the thin skin under the tongue.

Tablets & capsules

These are pill-like products that are made with CBD. The tablets are usually sublingual, meaning that you place them under the tongue and allow them to dissolve. Much like the oils and tinctures that you put under your tongue; this lets the CBD enter the system by absorbing through the thin skin there. The capsules are usually soft gels. That means that they are gels that you swallow like a pill and are filled with liquid CBD. This tend to take a little while longer to start working because the capsule needs to digest before the CBD can start working.

Edibles

CBD edibles are probably the most popular kind of CBD product. They are any food or drink that is made with CBD. Their popularity comes from the fact that they taste good and are easy to take. However, like the soft gel capsules, they do take a while to start working. This is because the food needs to digest before the CBD can enter the system.

FDA approved medications

Until 2018 there were no CBD-based medications that were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Epidiolex was the first to be approved by the agency. This medication is aimed at helping sooth and keep epileptic seizures to a minimum. Since then there have been other CBD-based medications that have been approved. Most of them are made to help with the nausea that often comes with cancer treatments.

How much CBD should I take?

This is an interesting question to answer because it changes with each person. Everyone reacts to CBD differently. Some people only have to take a little bit to get the effect that they are looking for. Others require much, much more.

First let’s talk about how you know that too much is too much. While CBD does appear to be safe overall, there are some side effects. They are usually along the lines of fatigue and mild dizziness. While that is not anything life threatening, it certainly is not fun and should be avoided. So, if you feel side effects like that, then you know that you have taken too much of the cannabinoid.

In order to figure out what is the right amount of CBD for you, you will need to do some experimenting. You will need to start with a low amount of the product you want to take. After you take that small amount, you will then need to wait and see how that amount sits with you. If, after a while, you still do not feel the effect you are looking for or any negative side effects, then you can increase the amount you take by a little bit. You should not keep increasing the amount until you feel negative side effects. Once you find the lowest amount that gives you the effect that you are looking for without any negative side effects, then you have found the right among of CBD for you.

You should also note that CBD does not mix well with all medications. Some medications do not work as well or not at all when used with CBD. If you are on medication and would like to start taking CBD, be sure to talk to your doctor before you start using it.

To sum all of this up, whether or not pure CBD is better depends on the person. Some people prefer it, while others prefer having other cannabinoids present. Pure CBD may require more than other kinds of the cannabinoid, but it could also mean a clearer experience. If you are new to CBD, the only way to know which you like better is to try some.

Whether you are new to CBD or have been using it for a while, this is the right site for you. Here on the Panacea Life Sciences website we have everything you could need CBD-wise. We have high-quality CBD products for just about everyone and their dog (literally). We also have articles that answer any question you may have about the cannabinoid. And if the articles do not answer your questions, you can send us any question or concerns that you may have through our contact us page. Or you can email us at [email protected].

What is in CBD cream?

The market is full of different products that claim to help consumers “look younger,” “get rid of skin damage,” or “anti-aging.” But, do we really believe these claims? If you take a look at the back of your current skin regime product I wouldn’t be surprised if products used will have many different ingredients that you have never heard of before. This does not mean that all the products you use are bad, it just means that maybe you need to take a second look for greater understanding.

If you have chosen to read this article it is likely that you are interested in a more holistic way to treat your skin health. Whether you are looking for a daily moisturizer or something to increase your skin health, cannabidiol (CBD) topicals may be exactly what you are looking for. We understand that trying something new can be intimidating and understanding what to look for can be difficult. That is why we are here. Panacea Life Sciences is here to help you understand the ins and outs of CBD, in general, as well as CBD skin health products. Let’s start off with the number one question we get, what is CBD?

CBD? What is it?

It is likely that you have heard of CBD and it is also likely that you have misunderstandings surrounding it. CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. This cannabinoid is often confused with the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is the component that when used, gives users a feeling of euphoria or ‘high’. The use of THC products has only been legalized in a few states. Products that have a high percentage of THC come from the marijuana plant. The marijuana plant is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant which has high amounts of THC and lower amounts of CBD. Marijuana has been legalized for medical use and/or recreational use in a handful of states.

CBD, however, is legal in all 50 states as long as it is produced from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa L., (defined as plants that have less than 0.3% THC. This defined amount is quite low which minimizes the possibility that hemp users will become inebriated and is a major reason why hemp was legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill. CBD has a plethora of different wellness opportunities, but it will not get users high. Which is the number one common misconception!

What is in CBD cream? What is it made of?

So, what is in CBD cream? Well, it all depends on where you purchase your cream and the type of cream it is. Our Transform THC-Free CBD Face Cream has a very short list of ingredients: Purified Water, Sorbitol Solution, CBD Hemp Oil, White Petrolatum, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Propylene Glycol, Simethicone, Polyethylene Glycol Monostearate, Glycerol Monostearate, Sorbic Acid and BHT.

Our product is made from all-natural CBD oil that is THC free with a mixture of skin moisturizers and essential oils. If the product you are looking at does not have an ingredient list on its website, steer clear, it could contain substances that could be potentially harmful. This specific product also comes a full spectrum version, which means that it contains mutliple components from the hemp plant that may provide additional benefits.  These two products, made specifically as a thicker face crème, are sold in two different package sizes.  They may assist in anti-aging, soothing, age spot correcting, sun damage correcting, and all things skin health.

Each CBD product that you find may have a different ingredient list. As a rule of thumb, the shorter the better and the more ingredients you know, the better! What other CBD topicals are out there, you may ask?

Other CBD topicals

Besides our two different face creams, we have other options available to help with your skin health journey. An important factor of CBD topicals to understand is that it never reaches the bloodstream but may provide benefits from the pores of the skin.

Soothe CBD Salve: This topical has another short list of ingredients: Shea butter, Coconut oil, Jojoba oil, Argan oil, CBD Hemp oil, Calendula, Arnica.

Essential Oils: Lavender, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Camphor. This product is formulated to possibly help relieve aches and pains. This is best used in a specific area to provide the most benefits.

CBD Hand Sanitizer: You may be thinking: CBD hand sanitizer? What is the point? CBD hand sanitizer does the same thing regular hand sanitizer does (diminish bacteria) but, with a twist. CBD! CBD itself has been known to have antibacterial properties. With added aloe for skin health and you are good to go.

Cleansing CBD Cream: This type of CBD topical is similar to the CBD hand sanitizer, but, with a nourishing twist. Our cleansing cream has all the bacteria fighting power with a skin softening agent.

There are many different types of CBD topicals available. It is important to check ingredient lists to ensure a high-quality product.

There are many different CBD products available that are not for topical use. Here is a list of products that may be helpful to you.

Soft gels or capsules: Soft gels/capsules are available to take orally. After taking orally they are broken down by the stomach and then enter into the bloodstream through the digestive tract. This is an easy way to get a daily, accurate intake of CBD.

Edibles: This way of using CBD is similar to a soft gel or capsule. You can add CBD oil to your favorite snack or try out gummies for a daily ingestible. This way also takes longer to feel the effects but lasts longer too.

Vapes: Although Panacea Life Sciences does not advocate the use of vapes, it is an option for CBD use. This way of using CBD has the highest rate of absorption as it directly enters the bloodstream via inhalation. That being said it is important to note that the effects are shorter lived and have negative health associations.

Tincture: A CBD tincture is an oil like substance. After the CBD is extracted from the hemp plant it is added to a carrier oil. This tincture is best used by placing an amount under the tongue. From there it is absorbed into the bloodstream. This is another quick way to get CBD into the bloodstream. Oftentimes users are worried about the taste but there are flavors available. It is important to note that there are different types of CBD. Broad spectrum, full spectrum and Isolate.

  1. Broad Spectrum: This type of CBD contains all cannabinoids but lacks the presence of THC. So, if you want a full cannabinoid profile without THC, choose this type.
  2. Full Spectrum: Full spectrum as all of the cannabinoids. This includes THC and CBD, plus all the others. The THC must be under 0.3% to be deemed a CBD full spectrum product.
  3. Isolate: An isolate is a cannabinoid alone. In our case it would be a CBD isolate. There are no other cannabinoids present.

Extraction processes

When looking at CBD products it may be important to look at how the CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. Some methods may be preferred more than others. Here are the top three extraction methods.

Solvent Extraction (Hydrocarbons and Natural Solvents): This process one would use a type of solvent rather than water. The solvent and CBD oil are combined and then the solvent is removed leaving the CBD behind. There are two types of solvents typically used: hydrocarbons and natural solvents.  Oils produced with solvents typically retain all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids form the plant, which as described above, may provide the entourage effect.  Certain solvents may leave behind unwanted contaminants when, especially when naphtha, petroleum, butane, or propane are used. Extra testing should be done to make sure these elements are not there. Food grade ethanol is a natural solvent that produces contaminant-free CBD oil.

Carbon Dioxide Extraction: Carbon dioxide is used to extract the CBD from the plant by using both carbon dioxide liquid and gas properties to extract. This is why carbon dioxide extraction is often known as Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE). In the beginning of the extraction, two different pressurized chambers are used. One, with the carbon dioxide, while the other contains the hemp plant. The chamber filled with carbon dioxide is pumped into the second chamber containing the hemp, where it solubilizes the hemp oil and allows the plant material to be separated from the plant fiber.  The CBD oil carbon dioxide mixture is then pumped into a third chamber where the carbon dioxide is evaporated, similar to how dry ice sublimates from solid to gas, leaving behind pure CBD oil without any solvent contaminations.

Steam Distillation: In this process, the steam separates the CBD oil from the plant itself. The hemp is placed in a separate container while a boiler is full of water beneath the hemp. Once boiling, the steam from the water travels upward to extract the CBD oil vapors from the hemp plant. The vapor from the plant is then trapped in a tube and added to oil or water. After this is collected, the oil is extracted from the water to make an oil. This process works well! But it does require a lot of the hemp plant and if the steam gets too hot it may damage the CBD oil extract.

What do people use CBD for?

Now that you have read what CBD cream is, what other products are available, and how CBD is extracted we bet you are wondering what people even use CBD for? Well, we are here to answer that question. Here is a list of why people choose to use CBD products.

May promote a sense of calm: CBD has been described as promoting a sense of calm in those who have feelings of anxiousness. In this study they tested people who have SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder). The subjects were given either a placebo or CBD. Researchers used neuroimaging (pictures of the brain) to see the results. To put it simply, those who were given CBD showed significantly lower SAD-related brain activity. This shows the CBD was able to help produce a sense of calm.

Anti-inflammatory: We here at Panacea Life Sciences have done our own research for this certain benefit. We had owners of pets who have age-related movement disorders provide CBD to their pet dogs. One of the hardships of aging are deteriorating joints that limit mobility and is associated with inflammation and pain. Pet owners described their pets gaining more joint mobility and flexibility being able to stand from a sitting position more easily, climb stairs and run.  This is preliminary information that suggests CBD may help maintain and support joint health.

Skin health: Here is a refresher of what we have stated above: Although CBD topical typically does not reach the bloodstream it does not mean that they cannot assist in healthy skin. This study shows that those with and without skin conditions had improved skin health after the use of CBD topicals. Scientists used three different tests to test the skin before and after as well as photographic evidence.

FDA approved medication: There are several FDA approved medications that contain CBD. Epidiolex, among others. This medication helps those with two severe types of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Then there are other medications that are used to help those going through anti-cancer treatments with the nausea it comes along with.

CBD and your skin, now what?

There are so many different aspects of CBD and what CBD can be used for. This is great but can also be confusing at times. We hope that after reading this article that you are more educated on CBD and the ways in which it may help you. Finding a reputable company to purchase your CBD from is key. Look for a company who explains their extraction process, testing processes and shows their ingredients on the label! Also look out for companies who make claims surrounding their CBD without evidence to back it up. We here at Panacea Life Sciences are committed to bringing the best CBD available to our customers. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns at [email protected]

How to know you bought pure CBD oil

It seems like everyone is getting into cannabidiol (CBD) these days. It feels like it is in every store and available in any product you can think of. So, when shopping for a CBD product, how do you know that you have gotten one that has CBD and only CBD?

Here at Panacea Life Sciences, we are all about education and making sure that people understand CBD properly. So, this blog is here to help guide you through the waters of finding pure CBD products, which can feel a little murky at times.

Covering the basics: a definition of CBD

To start with, we should go over what CBD even is. There is a fair chance that you already know this, but a little refresher never hurt anyone.

In cannabis plants, like hemp and marijuana, there is a kind of chemical compounds that are known as cannabinoids. This is a diverse group of compounds. So far, researchers have identified over 113 cannabinoids and there are likely more to be found. CBD is one of these 113 cannabinoids. While it has gained in notoriety in recent years, there is another cannabinoid that is much more well-known.

It is more than likely that you have heard of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Like CBD, THC is a cannabinoid, but it is much more famous. The reason for its fame is because THC is psychoactive. That means that it creates the high that is so commonly associated with cannabis. Because they are both cannabinoids, it is not an uncommon thought that CBD and THC are more-or-less the same. That they are both psychoactive. However, this is an erroneous line of thought. CBD is not psychoactive at all. It does not create any sort of inebriating effect.

CBD is normally extracted from hemp than from marijuana. The reason for this is based mainly in the fact that hemp has much higher levels of CBD and low levels of THC. This is unlike marijuana, which has high levels of THC and varying levels of CBD. These differences between hemp and marijuana also has an effect on their legal status in the United States. Because of hemp’s low levels of THC, it was made federally legal in the US in 2018. Marijuana, on the other hand, is still federally illegal, but some states have legalized it on some level.

There are a lot of reasons why people use CBD. One of the more common reasons is that it may be able to help people achieve a greater sense of calm. This study found that CBD was able to keep people calm when facing a stressful situation. Another reason is that it may be able to help support joint health, potentially helping with movement. For example, this study found that the cannabinoid was able to help with inflammation caused by arthritis. There has been a fair amount of research that has been done on CBD over the last couple of decades. Many of these studies have found new reasons to use CBD. No doubt future research will find more.

As mentioned, this is just a brief review of what CBD is. There is still a fair amount to know about it, like the different kinds of CBD extract, for example.

The different kinds of CBD extract

CBD extract is not as cut and dry as many people may think. There are different kinds of the extract. To be more exact, there are three main kinds. They are full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate. The differences between them is not unlike the difference between hemp and marijuana: it is all based on what cannabinoids are in them.

Full spectrum

This is the least processed form of CBD extract. But that does not make it the purest. In fact, full spectrum is the least pure kind of CBD out there. It is CBD extract that has everything else that may come out of the hemp plant with the CBD during the extraction. This includes other cannabinoids, like THC. However, it is not a high amount of THC. Hemp products legally cannot have more than 0.3% THC in them, which is not enough to create a high.

Broad spectrum

Broad spectrum CBD extract is pretty similar to full spectrum, but with one specific difference. Broad spectrum does not have any THC in it. It has all of the compounds and cannabinoids that may come with the CBD during extraction, however the THC is filtered out of it. The appeal of these two kinds of CBD extract is something called the entourage effect. This is when compounds build on each other to potentially create a stronger effect.

CBD isolate

If you are looking for a pure CBD product, this is the label you are going to want to look for. CBD isolate is exactly what it sounds like. It is just CBD. All other cannabinoids and compounds have been filtered out of it, leaving only the target cannabinoid. CBD isolated may not be as strong as the other extracts. However, it may also provide a clearer CBD experience.

To reiterate what is expressed above; if you are looking for a pure CBD oil, you are going to want to pay attention to what it says on the label. It is more than likely going to have one of the titles listed above. A pure CBD product, that has nothing but CBD, will have a label that says, “CBD isolate,” or even just “isolate.” If a label does not express whether or not it has THC in it in anyway, it is probably a product you will want to stay away from.

How to know if a CBD manufacturer is trustworthy

While we are talking about things you should keep away from, we should probably touch on what you should look for in a CBD manufacturer. The CBD industry is still fairly new, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is doing what it can to keep things regulated, but there is still work that needs to be done. As a result, there are some companies that are trying to take advantage of the lack of knowledge of CBD. These are companies that you do not want to buy CBD from as they are likely not as careful with their product.

So, how exactly do you avoid these less-than-reputable manufacturers? The best way is research. You will need to be willing to do a little bit of reading. You will want to read reviews, both of the company and the product (or products) that you are interested in. Be sure to read not only reviews on the company’s website, but also on third party sites. This way you avoid any potential bias that may come up.

You should also explore the company’s website a little. They should have information on there about their production process. If a manufacturer is not transparent about how they make their products, there may be something a little shady about them.

CBD manufacturers should also have the quality of their products tested. They should do their own testing, as well as having a third-party test it. This way they avoid bias. This information should also be available on their site. Never trust a CBD manufacturer that is not transparent about testing their products.

This may sound like a lot of work just to find some CBD. But if it means that you get a safe, high-quality CBD product then it is worth it.

The many forms that CBD products come in

Now that you know what to look for in a CBD product and its manufacturer, let’s go over what options you have when looking for a good CBD product. After all, CBD extract is versatile and is easily made into any product. So, we are going to do a quick overview of the main categories of CBD products that are out there.

Tinctures & oils

These are the more traditional version of CBD products and what you are likely to get when you go looking for CBD oils. They are CBD extract that has been mixed with a carrier oil, like palm or coconut oil. These you can take in a couple of different ways. You can mix some in with food or drink. This route is a little bit longer because the food needs to digest to start working. You can also place the drops directly into your mouth. If you go with this strategy, it is best to put the drops under your tongue because the skin there is thin. This allows the CBD to absorb into the system much more quickly.

Tablets & capsules

These are products that are not unlike regular pills. However, there are specific forms they tend to take. CBD tablets are usually sublingual. That means that you place them under your tongue and allow them to dissolve. Like with tinctures, the CBD absorbs through the thin skin there letting it get to work much more quickly. CBD capsules are often soft gels. That means they look like regular pills but contain liquid CBD in them. That makes them easier to swallow and they may start working faster than regular pills. However, they do still need to digest so they do take longer than tablets and tinctures.

Edibles

You can probably deduce what CBD edibles are. They are any food or drink that is made with CBD. These are very popular in the CBD community. Their popularity rises from the fact that they taste good and are easy to take. However, edibles tend to take the longest to start working. This is because the food or drink needs to digest before the CBD can enter the system and start working. But their effects also tend to last the longest. So, there is a bit of give and take there.

Topicals

This is a particularly broad category of CBD products. Unlike the capsules and tablets there is not one specific form they tend to take. Topicals are anything that you rub onto your skin (lotions, salves, balms, creams, or even hand sanitizers) that have been made with CBD. They do not provide the overall effect that the products you take orally do. Their effect is much more localized. This is because the CBD does not enter the bloodstream with topicals. Instead they absorb through the pores. The CBD is still able to do its work, but it is much more focused in one area. Topicals work best when they are applied liberally and often.

FDA-approved medications

There are a handful of CBD-based medications that have been approved by the FDA. It is likely that there will be more in the future. But for now, CBD-base FDA-approved medications include Epidiolex, which is aimed at helping reduce epileptic seizures, and others that are made to help reduce the nausea that often comes along with cancer treatments.

These the main categories of CBD products out there right now. The future will more than likely bring even more interesting CBD products to try out. For now, there are still plenty to choose from.

To sum all of this up, you will know that the product you bought has pure CBD in it if it says “CBD isolate” on the label. It is also helpful if you buy your CBD from a manufacturer that is transparent and trustworthy. Hopefully, this blog has given you a good guide to work off of when shopping for CBD products.

The foodie’s guide to CBD gummies

So, your gastronomic adventures have led you to a new frontier: the world of cannabidiol (CBD). If you are going to explore CBD, it is always nice to have a bit of a guide. This article is aimed at guiding you through the important information surrounding one of the most popular CBD products, gummies.

What even is CBD?

Let’s start with the basics. More specifically, let’s talk about what exactly CBD is (and almost equally as important, what it is not).

Cannabinoids are a specific class of chemical compounds that are found in cannabis plants, like hemp and marijuana. There are over 113 different cannabinoids, CBD is just one of them. There is another cannabinoid that you are probably more familiar with, it is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is such a well-known cannabinoid because of its effect on people. It is what is known as psychoactive. That means that it has an inebriating effect that is more commonly referred to as a “high.” It is the reason that this high is so often associated with cannabis. CBD often gets lumped with THC, leading many to believe that it also causes people to get high. However, that is not true. CBD is not psychoactive in any way and does not cause any inebriation.

CBD is normally extracted from the hemp variety of cannabis. This is for a couple of reasons. One of which is that hemp is much higher in CBD than it is in THC (it has less than 0.3% THC content). This makes the extraction process that much easier for the manufacturers. The other reason is that hemp is federally legal across the United States. Marijuana, which is very high in THC, is still federally illegal. Some states have legalized it on some level (whether it is for medical or general use), but only about 11 of the 50.

There has been a definite upswing in research on CBD in recent years. This has led to a better understanding of the benefits that CBD may be able to offer. For example, this study wanted to see what kind of effect CBD may have on a nervous disposition. The researchers had the test subjects engage in an anxiety-inducing task, giving some of them CBD beforehand. Those who were given the CBD reported feeling more confident about the task they were given. Another study tested CBD against inflammation that was caused by oxidative stress. The researchers concluded that the CBD was greatly able to help reduce the inflammation.

What is so great about CBD gummies?

CBD products come in many different shapes and forms. But gummies are one of the most popular ways to take the cannabinoid. But why is that?

There are a few reasons why people love CBD gummies. One of the main ones lies in the taste. Because CBD comes from cannabis it tends to taste like, well, cannabis. It has the earthy flavor that is so distinct in cannabis. Some people do not mind it, like it even. However, there are many who cannot stand it. In fact, the flavor may be a deal breaker for them. CBD gummies, as you may have guessed, are made with flavoring (generally of the fruity persuasion). This makes it easier for those who do not like that cannabis taste to take CBD.

Another reason for the gummies’ popularity is the ease of control. Some CBD products make it a bit difficult to have a good idea of how much you have taken. Sometimes when counting out drops of a CBD tincture an extra drop or two might come out. CBD gummies are made with the exact same amount of CBD in every individual gummy. That way you always know exactly how much CBD you have taken.

Some people really like taking CBD gummies just because they are fun. It is like eating candy that has benefits beyond just tasting good. Who would not want that?

How to find good CBD gummies

Now that you have an idea of what CBD is and why people love gummies so much, let’s talk about how you can get your hands on some good ones.

The main thing that you need to be willing to do to find high-quality CBD gummies is read. It is always a good idea to read the reviews of the product you are interested in, as well as the reviews about the company that makes them. You should also read reviews that are on their site and third-party sites. This way you get a good idea of what kind of quality their products are without the worry of any bias. This will require a bit of exploring, but if you are foodie, you are probably used to exploring.

You should also pay close attention to the company’s website. A trustworthy CBD manufacturer should use their website as a chance to be completely open and honest about their processes for extraction, isolation, testing the extract, quality control and making the gummies. If the company you are looking does not include that information, it is probably a little shady and you may want to look elsewhere for your gummies.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is third party testing. Most CBD manufacturers do some sort of in-house testing for the purity and quality of their extract. However, that is not enough. Afterall, there may be bias that happens with in that testing, whether it is intentional or not. So, a good CBD company should also have a third party test their extracts, to ensure the quality. This information should also be on their site.

This is just a quick guide, a little introduction, to the world of CBD gummies. If you want to know more, you just need to be adventurous. Try a few different kinds of CBD gummies and see what kind is best for you. We would recommend our Panacea Cherry Bomb gummies. They are made with organically grown, locally sourced hemp and have a delicious cherry flavor. Bon appetite!

What does CBD feel like for a dog?

Perhaps you have used cannabidiol (CBD) yourself and are curious as to how your animal would react to such things. Well, look no further. Panacea Life Sciences is determined to educate our customers in the most efficient way possible. Although there is no way to possibly communicate with your furry friends, we can watch and learn and take notes on their actions. CBD is widely popular but still needs lots of research to be understood more. Like many others, we are working to make that possible. For now, we can use the information we have to build a foundation to understand what CBD can do for you as well as your dog. Let’s first start with the basics. What is CBD?

CBD: What is it?

Here are the basics of what CBD is and what it is not. CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is often confused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These two cannabinoids are often found together but are distinct compounds found at different levels in hemp and marijuana plants.

THC is the cannabinoid that you are likely to have heard of before CBD. This is because THC is the cannabinoid that gives users the psychoactive feeling or the ‘high’ associated with marijuana use. Unlike THC CBD has no psychoactive components. CBD has been described to potentially provide many health wellness benefits.

CBD may be derived from the hemp plant as well as the marijuana plant. How may this be? Hemp and marijuana are both variations of the Cannabis sativa plant. Marijuana, however, contains greater amounts of THC and therefore is not legal in all fifty states. The states that have legalized the use and growth of marijuana have strict limits as to who can partake. Some states use marijuana for medicinal purposes, recreational purposes, or both.

CBD has been legalized across the country because of the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill allows farmers to grow and sell the hemp plant throughout the United States. A CBD product must have less or at 0.3% of THC to be legally sold as a CBD product. That 0.3% of THC will not get CBD users high as it is not enough to make a psychoactive effect.

CBD and man’s best friend

So, what about CBD and your dog? Why use it? How do you give it to your dog? Is it safe? These are all valid questions and we will do our best to answer. Like we have stated before there is still a lot of research that needs to be done. But we here at Panacea Life Sciences have done a bit of our own research.

In this study we focused on  horses (equine). Even though this study is not geared toward dogs, but it can still be helpful when looking at CBD for pets and animals in general. These horses were given fifty milligrams of CBD two times a day for two weeks. Before the study, these horses were seen to have visible movement impairment or feelings of anxiousness. At the end of the two weeks the results and indicated that CBD improved the gait of horses in the study and trended to decrease anxiety-related behaviors.

In another study we asked pet owners of dogs with age-related movement disorders to give them CBD to see if there would be any improvements to their conditions. We asked these pet owners to give their dogs CBD twice a day for four weeks straight. One milligram was administered for each 5 kilograms of body weight to make sure the dog was getting the proper amount for its size. The pet owners also took an online weekly test as well as before and after videos were taken of dogs doing certain movements. After the four weeks, we found that all of the measures we had taken had significantly improved. The dogs in the study had increased mobility and because of this we can understand that CBD may assist with improvement of joint health and flexibility in those dogs who have age related movement issues.

Now that we understand that there are valuable uses for CBD among the animal world. What CBD products are there?

CBD products for animals

There are a handful of CBD products available for animals. Here are some of them:

Now what?

Unfortunately, we cannot speak with our favorite household pets. But we can watch for different actions and moods to ensure that CBD is having a positive impact on your animal. As always, we recommend talking with a veterinarian before administering CBD to your pet. Watching closely to your pet during this time is important. Always start with a low amount and slowly increase as you deem fit. It is also important to make sure that your pet product is THC free, as THC can be toxic to animals. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns surrounding CBD and your pet at [email protected].

Using CBD and how to talk about it with others

Cannabidiol (CBD) has gained in popularity in recent years, but that does not mean that everyone is comfortable with it. There are many people who feel uncomfortable with the idea of someone taking CBD, which makes it hard to talk about it with them. So how do you approach talking about something that still seems a little taboo?

What is CBD?

You may already know what CBD is. But if you are going to talk about with others, it is nice to have a definition laid out for you.

CBD is a chemical compound found in cannabis plants. It falls under a broad category of compounds known as cannabinoids. There are over 113 cannabinoids that scientists have identified so far and there are likely even more. While CBD is one of the more well-known cannabinoids, there is one that it is often unfairly confused with. That would be tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

This confusion often comes from the fact the THC is one of the few cannabinoids that many people are aware of. Its fame stems mainly from the effect that it has on people. THC is psychoactive. That means that it causes the inebriation that is more commonly called a “high” and is often associated with cannabis. This leads many people to believe that CBD is also psychoactive. However, that is not the case. CBD has no inebriating effects on its users.

There are two variations of cannabis that are often used interchangeably: hemp and marijuana. However, they are actually considered different enough for one of them to considered legal and the other illegal. This difference is defined by the concentration of THC in them. Hemp has low levels of THC (less than 0.3% to be exact), leading to its legalization in the United States in 2018. Marijuana, on the other hand, is still federally illegal because it has high levels of THC. An important thing to note about these two variations of cannabis is, hemp has high levels of CBD and marijuana has low levels. As a result, most CBD manufacturers us hemp in their extraction rather than marijuana.

There are three main forms of CBD extract: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. The hint to the differences between them lies in their names. Each name refers to how many other cannabinoids exist within the extract along with the CBD. Full-spectrum contains the most plant components. It has every other cannabinoid and compound that comes with the CBD during the extraction process, including THC (which, as talked about earlier, cannot be more than 0.3%). Broad-spectrum is similar to full-spectrum, but with one important difference, it does not have any THC in it. The appeal of these two extracts is something called the entourage effect. This is when compounds build upon each other to provide a stronger effect. As you probably guessed, CBD isolate is just that: CBD that has been isolated from everything else. There are no other cannabinoids or compounds in CBD products made with isolate. These may not be as strong, but they may provide a “purer” CBD experience.

That was just a brief overview of what CBD is. Now let’s talk about what CBD may do.

What does CBD do?

There has been much research looking into what benefits CBD may offer people. This research is ever growing, but the studies that have been published so far have been promising. Let’s talk about what some of those studies say.

Helping promote a sense of calm

One of the main effects that CBD is known for is its potential ability to help achieve a greater sense of calm. This study had test subjects with anxiety participate in public speaking. Some of the subjects were given CBD beforehand. Those who were given the cannabinoid took to the challenge more calmly and with more confidence.

Helping reduce inflammation

This is an area of high interest that has been explored by researchers. The number of studies is understandable as inflammation is an issue that plagues many people and can cause some serious discomfort and difficulty moving. These studies have shown many interesting and promising results. For example, this study focused on how CBD interacts with inflammation caused by oxidative stress. The researchers found that CBD was greatly able to reduce the inflammation.

Helping reduce epileptic seizures

This arena of study has been so successful it has led to the first pure CBD-based medication to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It is a medication called Epidiolex. It is aimed at helping keep seizures caused by a severe form of epilepsy to as much of a minimum as possible. It is approved for use in people of almost every age, including children, who often have to deal with the hardest epileptic side effects.

Helping with acne

This particular benefit may be a little surprising. After all, how can a compound that is supposed to provide a calming effect, help with inflammation and epilepsy also have an effect on skin health? Most studies attribute it to the cannabinoid’s effect on sebum production. That is the oily substance that the body makes to help protect the skin. However, too much of it can clog the pores and cause acne. This study was looking at how CBD effected sebum production. The researchers found that the CBD helped reduce the production and as a result, helped reduce the severity of the acne.

As mentioned, the number of studies done on CBD’s effects grows constantly. There is much more to know about what CBD may be able to offer for people. Those are just a few examples of what we know so far.

How to take CBD

If the potential benefits of CBD caught your eye, it is likely that you are wondering how exactly someone can take CBD. Well, there are many options out there. CBD manufacturers have developed many different products aimed at getting the best out of the cannabinoid, and they are working on more all the time. Let’s talk about what some of them are.

Topicals

This category of CBD product includes lotions, salves, and cremes. It is basically any CBD product that you rub on your skin (instead of taking orally like most CBD products). These are more likely to have a localized effect. This is because the CBD in these products does not enter the bloodstream, like it does in others. The CBD is going to absorb through the pores and stay around the area where it is used.

Oils & tinctures

These are often considered the more “traditional” option for CBD products. They are CBD extracts that have been mixed with a carrier oil, like coconut oil. There are a couple of different ways that you can take oils and tinctures. You can either mix some in with a food or drink, or you can place the drops directly into your mouth, under your tongue.

Edibles

The name of these CBD products is fairly self-explanatory. They are food or drinks that have been made with the cannabinoid. These are very popular. It is likely because they taste good and are easy to take. However, they are one of the slower ways to take CBD, as the food needs to digest before the CBD can start to work.

Capsules & tablets

These are pill-like CBD products. The capsules are usually soft gels, which makes them easier to swallow and they do digest faster. However, they do still need to digest so it could take some time. CBD tablets are often sublingual tablets. That means that you take them by placing them under your tongue and allow them to dissolve. The CBD tends to work faster with these because the skin under the tongue is thin and allows things to absorb better.

How to talk about it

Despite the fact that CBD is more prevalent than ever, there is still an odd stigma around it. This could make many people who are benefiting from the cannabinoid hesitant to talk about it with other people. They fear that they will be pegged as a “druggie” or something along those lines. If this is concern of yours, the biggest thing you need to remember is that misconceptions usually come from a lack of knowledge.

If you want to talk to people about CBD, the best thing to do is provide them with what could be considered some of the most important information about it. This would include things like, the fact that CBD is not psychoactive. It is THC that makes people high, not CBD. Even when a CBD product has THC in it, it legally cannot be a concentration high enough to create inebriation.

Be sure to also let them know that CBD is normally extracted from hemp rather than marijuana. That there is a distinction between them, one of the most important being that hemp is legal throughout the United States. Marijuana is only legal at some capacity in a handful of states.

Basically, the best way to talk about CBD with others is to use the information provided in this article. If someone is still bothered by the idea of you using CBD, then that is too bad for them. They may not ever understand the benefits that the cannabinoid could offer them.

Hemp gummies that won’t get you high

It is not usual to see hemp in many products these days. Hemp gummies are a very common product. If you are interested in hemp gummies, but are new to the world of cannabis, you probably have a lot of questions. Not to worry, that is what we, at Panacea Life Sciences, are here for. One thing you may be wondering is where you can find hemp gummies that will not get you high. Well, let’s talk about it.

Hemp vs. marijuana: what is the difference?

To start with, let’s talk about what exactly hemp is and what it is not.

There is a chance that you have always thought that hemp and marijuana are different words for the same thing. Or you have just never really thought about it at all. It is understandable why you would think that, but it is not the case. Hemp and marijuana are in fact pretty different.

Both marijuana and hemp are variations of the cannabis plant. A very important difference between the two plants is in the concentration of a particular chemical compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). You have probably heard of THC before. It is the psychoactive component of cannabis. Meaning that it is the thing that causes the high that is so normally associated with marijuana use. It is also that compound that separates hemp from marijuana.

Marijuana has high levels of THC. Hemp, on the other hand, is defined by having less than 0.3% THC content. That difference has had an impact on another aspect of these cannabis variations. Hemp’s low levels of THC led to the legalization of hemp in the United States. This happened thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. This is a bill that gets reviewed and passed every five years that controls all things agricultural. That year’s version of the bill included a provision that officially legalized the growing and selling of hemp (as long as it is truly hemp and does not have more than 0.3% THC). Marijuana, however, is not federally legal because of its THC content. Some states have legalized it on one level or another (medical or general). But it is still considered a controlled substance on the federal level.

So, what you should take away from this is that there are two very big differences between hemp and marijuana. One is that hemp is low in THC, much lower than marijuana. The other is that hemp is legal across the country, while marijuana is still federally illegal.

What hemp gummies will not get me high?

This is a very easy question to answer because the answer is none. No hemp gummies should get you high. As discussed above, hemp is very low in THC, the compound that creates a high. It is in fact so low that it is very, very unlikely that a hemp product will get you high, including hemp gummies.

However, it is understandable if the presence of any THC is enough to make you worry. So, there are specific kinds of gummies that offer that potential benefits of hemp without any of the THC. Let’s go over what they are.

Full spectrum

Gummies made with full spectrum hemp extract have everything in them. This does include the 0.3% THC. So, if you are actively avoiding THC, this may not be the option for you. However, as mentioned above, the THC content is not enough to cause any inebriation.

Broad spectrum

Broad spectrum hemp extract is similar to full spectrum, but it has one very important difference. Broad spectrum does not have any THC in it. Everything else that is found in the hemp plant is left in, but the THC is completely filtered out. This is a potential option if you are looking to avoid THC.

CBD isolate

You may be thinking that this does not sound like it does not have anything to do with hemp, but as we will talk about in a minute, cannabidiol (CBD) is very important when it comes to hemp. The main thing that you need to know is that CBD isolate is hemp extract that has everything filtered out of it except the CBD. This means that there is not THC in it.

But, you may be asking, why should anyone care about CBD? Let’s talk about it.

CBD? What is that?

CBD, much like THC, is a chemical compound that is found in both variations of cannabis. In fact, CBD and THC both fall under the same title as they are both cannabinoids (a specific kind of chemical compounds that are found in cannabis). As a result, many people think that THC and CBD are the same, but they are pretty different. As discussed above, THC is psychoactive, but CBD is not. It does not create any sort of high or inebriation.

CBD is found in both hemp and marijuana. However, manufacturers of CBD products use hemp to extract the cannabinoid rather than marijuana. This is because hemp not only has low levels of THC, but it also has high levels of CBD. Marijuana, meanwhile, has low levels of CBD. Of course, it also helps that hemp is federally legal.

The reason why you may be interested in a hemp gummy that only has CBD in it is because CBD has many potential benefits to offer. Recently, research on CBD has really taken off. There are have been many studies looking at several different areas may be able to help with. One particular area that many researchers have looked into is CBD’s potential ability to help people achieve a greater state of calm. This study tested this by having test subjects participate in public speaking, arguably a very stress-inducing activity. Some of the test subjects were given CBD and others were not. The researchers concluded that the subjects given the CBD were able to face the public speaking more calmly and as a result, handled the challenge better.

Another area that has been looked at often with CBD is inflammation. For example, this study wanted to look at inflammation caused by oxidative stress specifically. The researchers found that CBD was greatly able to help reduce the inflammation. This is promising as oxidative stress-caused inflammation is a symptom of many conditions including depression and Alzheimer disease.

Other studies have focused on skin health issues such as acne. It does make sense, as inflammation is a symptom of chronic acne. But what could CBD do, beyond just helping to reduce inflammation? One study suggests that it could help with plenty. The researchers in the course of their study found that CBD was able to reduce the production of sebum. This is the oil that is produced by the skin to protect it. While a certain amount of sebum is required for healthy skin, too much can clog the pores and cause acne. CBD’s potential effect on sebum production could mean that CBD could help reduce acne.

These are just a few examples of what potential benefits the cannabinoid could bring, without the potential of getting high.

What is so great about gummies?

So, now that we have cleared a few items up about hemp and the active component of the plant, it is time to about why someone should chose hemp gummies. Especially when there are so many other options available.

Hemp gummies are probably one of the more popular products within the industry. One of the reasons why is because of the taste. As you may have guessed, most oral hemp products taste like hemp. They have that distinct earthy taste. Some people do not mind that flavor, but for others it is nearly unbearable. Many of these products are made with other oils to help with the flavor, but that is not enough for some. Hemp gummies are usually made with a strong fruit flavor. This makes the product taste like any regular gummy candy. It almost makes them too easy to take.

The other appeal of hemp gummies is the ease of control. Every gummy is made with exactly same amount of hemp extract. This makes it so that you always know exactly how much hemp you have taken. Some other hemp products, like tinctures for example, can be a little bit harder to control. With tinctures, you have a good idea of how much hemp extract is in each drop. However, sometimes while measuring out your drops, an extra drop or two may come out of the dropper before you can stop them. While hemp extract is not considered to be dangerous, it is still a good idea to not take too much of it. Gummies make it easy to control the amount you take.

Every product has its advantages and disadvantages. Gummies are clearly no exception. So, when deciding whether or not gummies are the right hemp product for you, you just need to weigh what is laid out for you above. If the digestion time seems like too much to wait for, then you should look into a hemp tincture or tablet instead. Those you place under your tongue, allowing the cannabinoids to absorb into your system through the thin skin that is under the tongue.

How many hemp gummies should I take?

This can be a bit of a tricky question to answer. Everyone responds to hemp a little bit differently. Some need a lot of it to notice any sort of effect, others need very little. So, you will have to experiment.

First let’s talk about what you should keep an eye out for. As mentioned above, hemp extract is not considered too dangerous, but you do not want to take too much of it. This is because it does have some negative side effects. These usually consist of things like gastrointestinal upset and fatigue. These are not necessarily dangerous side effects, but they still are not fun. They are normally associated with taking too much hemp, so they are easily avoided.

The best way to go about finding the right amount for you is by starting out low and slow. This means, start out with a low amount of the hemp gummies (maybe half a gummy for example) and see how that sits with you. If does not give you any negative side effects, then you can up it a bit. The lowest amount of hemp that gives you the effect that you are looking for without any negative side effects is the right amount for you.

Most companies that make hemp gummies would recommend sticking with only one gummy per day. However, this may vary from person to person, and from gummy to gummy. Some hemp products are going to be made with a higher concentration than others. All of it requires a certain degree of diligence and control.

You should note that hemp does not always mix well with medications. There are some medications that do not work as well, or stop working entirely, in the presence of some of the cannabinoids found in hemp. If you would like to start using hemp gummies, but are on medication already, you should consult with your healthcare provider first. They should know how the gummies will interact with your medication.

To sum all of this up, no hemp gummies should get you high. Hemp has such a low THC content (less than 0.3%, if you remember), that it should not cause any intoxication. However, because hemp has a high CBD content, there is plenty of good the gummies may do you. If you are ready to give some hemp gummies a try, why not try some of ours? Here at Panacea Life Sciences we sell Cherry Bomb gummies, which are delicious, cherry-flavored gummies made with CBD isolate, so that you do not have to worry about the presence of any THC. What CBD benefits are being explored?

Cannabidiol (CBD) has experienced a major rise in popularity over the last few years. You can find CBD products in many different stores across the United States and comes in many different forms.  This could leave many people wondering why is CBD so popular? Why do people love CBD so much? What are the benefits of using it and what research is backing that up?

Well, let’s talk about it.

Starting simple: defining CBD

It only makes sense to define what something is before we start talking about its potential benefits. So, what even is CBD?

CBD is one of over 113 of specific kind of chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. These compounds are commonly found in cannabis plants like hemp and marijuana. There are a lot of different cannabinoids, but there is only one other one that you have probably heard of. That would be tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is one of the most well-known cannabinoids. This is because of the effect that it has. It is psychoactive. That means that it creates the inebriation (normally referred to as a “high”) that is so commonly associated with cannabis. THC is often thought to be interchangeable to with CBD, leading many to believe that CBD is also psychoactive. This is not the case, though. CBD is not psychoactive and should not have any effect on someone’s cognitive abilities.

While CBD is found in both variations of cannabis, it is more often derived from hemp than from marijuana. This is because hemp has high levels of CBD and low levels of THC (less than 0.3% to be exact). Marijuana, on the other hand, has high levels of THC and varying levels of CBD. It also helps that hemp is federally legal in in the United States. This legalization came as a result of the 2018 Farm Bill which made it legal for farmers to grow and sell hemp. Meanwhile, marijuana is still federally illegal. Some states have legalized it, but not all. This makes it easier to sell the CBD products without concern about what states have legalized the plant and which have not.

As mentioned, there has been a lot of research that has been done on CBD lately. There are a lot of different areas that have been focused on and looked at pretty extensively. But what areas in particular look the most promising?

How CBD may be able to affect your state of mind

While CBD is not psychoactive or known for having any effect on cognitive abilities, it is known for helping people achieve a greater state of calm. As a result, many studies have been focused on how CBD could work with stress.

For example, in this study researchers had test subjects with social anxiety participate in public speaking. Some of the test subjects where given CBD before they had to speak. Those who were give CBD reported feeling calmer and more confident when facing that stressful situation.

Another study looked at a test subject that had both anxiety and insomnia that were caused by Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. The subject was given a trial run of CBD. The researchers noted not only a decrease in the subject’s anxiety symptoms, but also saw that the patient’s sleep greatly improved in both length and quality.

These two studies among many others suggest that CBD may be able to help its users achieve a greater sense of calm. That could mean better sleep and better focus when dealing with stressful situations. It could also mean an overall improvement in one’s quality of life.

How CBD interacts with inflammation

Inflammation is a common issue that can cause issues within the joints and difficulty moving. Many researchers have been interested by the interactions between CBD and inflammation and the promise those interactions hold.

This study, for example, wanted to look at inflammation that was associated with oxidative stress. This is because oxidative stress has a hand in a number of conditions, including types 1 and 2 diabetes, Alzheimer disease, and specific kinds of arthritis, among many other conditions. The researchers through the course of their study found that CBD was greatly able to help reduce the inflammation caused by the oxidative stress.

Another study focused on how CBD affected the inflammation in pancreatitis in mice. The researchers stimulated pancreatitis in mice and dosed mice with placebo or CBD. After some observation, the researchers concluded that the inflammation in the mice that were give CBD was reduced significantly. Especially when compared with the mice that were give other medications or placebo.

These are just a couple of studies among a multitude that have looked at CBD and inflammation. Most of them have shown some very promising results. This could mean that there is some relief in store for those who struggle with any of a number of issues in which inflammation plays a part.

How CBD may be able help with skin health

This particular area of study may come as a surprise to those who are not very familiar with CBD. After all, what could something made from cannabis do to help skin? As many studies suggest, it may be able to help to improve overall skin health.

For example, this study wanted to see how CBD effected the sebum production in skin. Sebum is the oil that your skin produces in order to protect it from outside forces like dirt and sun. However, it is not uncommon for the skin to produce too much of the oil. The sebum then mixes with dirt and other residue on the skin and clogs up the pores. The blockage of the pore triggers an immune response as the body tries to restore skin function, resulting it the condition we call acne. Researchers who conducted this study found that CBD was able to help stem the production of sebum, which could be a great help for those who skin produces too much of the oil. There are also two human clinical studies (here and here) that will report soon on CBD effects on acne.

Another study looked at how CBD interacted with melanogenesis. This is a process that helps protects the skin against ultraviolet light, keeping down burns and skin damage. The researchers found that the cannabinoid was able to help give a boost to the melanogenesis process, potentially help providing more protection for the skin from external forces.

Everyone has at some point spent time worrying about their skin and how healthy it is. These studies, among others, suggest that CBD could help provide your skin with a little bit of a boost to its overall health.

What CBD products are out there?

Now, that we have gone over some of the exciting potential benefits of using CBD, let’s talk about what your options are for taking it. There are a lot of different CBD products out there, because extract is easily added to basically anything. So, we are going to talk about some of the overall categories of CBD products.

Edibles

You can probably guess what these are. They are food and drinks that have been made with CBD extract. They are one of the most popular CBD products available. There are a few reasons for this. One is that they taste good, the other is that they are easy to take (as in you just eat or drink them). The one downside is that they are often slow to start working. This is because the food or drink needs to digest before the CBD can enter the system and start working.

Tinctures & oils

Oils and tinctures are CBD extract that have been mixed with a carrier oil, like coconut oil. These you take either by mixing them in with food or drink, or by putting the drops directly into your mouth, under your tongue. Most manufacturers recommend the under-the-tongue route because the skin under the tongue is thin. This allows the CBD to absorb into the system and start its work much more quickly.

Capsules & Tablets

These are pill-like products. The capsules are generally soft gels. They are pills made with liquid CBD. These are flexible and easy to take. However, they do need to digest before they can start working, so tend to take a bit longer. CBD tablets are usually sublingual tablets. These you place under your tongue and allow to dissolve. Much like tinctures and oils, they work quickly because they absorb through the thin skin under the tongue.

Topicals

CBD topicals are basically any lotion, cream, or salve that has been made with CBD extract. These do not provide the same overall effect that the oral products are likely too. This is because the CBD does not typically enter the bloodstream like it does with the other products. Instead, it absorbs through the pores, generally stay where it is applied. This work best when they are used regularly.

How to find the right amount of CBD for you

There is no one set amount of CBD that is right for people of a particular age or weight. Everyone reacts to the cannabinoid a little bit differently, and while weight and age can play a part, they are not the only factors to consider. So, when starting CBD for the first time, you may have to do some experimentation.

Before we can talk about how to find the right amount of CBD, we need to talk about what to avoid while taking the cannabinoid. CBD is considered to be safe overall. However, it does have some negative side effects. They are normally associated with taking too much CBD and consist of things like nausea and dizziness. While not life threatening, those side effects are still not fun, and you should do your best to avoid them. Of course, the way to do that is by finding the right amount of CBD for you.

The best way to go about starting to take CBD is by keeping the initial amount as low as you can. After taking that, wait a little while and see how it sits with you. If after an hour or so you do not notice any negative side effects, but you also are not seeing the effects that you are looking for, then you can try taking some more. It is important to go about this carefully. Do not just take CBD until you experience negative side effects. Whatever is the smallest amount that does not give you any negative side effects but does give you the positive effect you are looking for, then that is amount for you.

You should also note that CBD does not mix well with all medication. It causes some medications to have a lessened effect and others to stop working entirely. If you are taking medications and want to start using CBD, be sure to discuss it with your healthcare provider first. They should know whether or not your medications will safely mix with CBD.

It is also important to know that most CBD products are intended for those who are 18 or older. Keep CBD products out of reach of children. Especially products, like edibles, that do not look very different from their non-CBD equivalents.

The examples of research that has been done on CBD in this article are just that, examples. This article only went over a couple of the areas that researchers have been looking into, so there is even more to know. There is so much research that has been done on the cannabinoid. There is even more yet to come. As the years pass, we will likely learn more about what potential benefits the cannabinoid may hold for us.

How to use CBD to help your pet remain calm

We all love our pets. They are members of the family and deserve to be treated as such. So, when a pet is unhappy and anxious, it tends to make everyone else unhappy. What is a pet owner to do when their beloved dog or cat has an anxious disposition? After all, there are not as many resources for a pet’s state of mind as there is for a person’s mental state.

Luckily, recent research has been pointing at a more holistic approach for helping a pet deal with nervousness: cannabidiol (CBD).

Back to basics: defining CBD

Before we can talk about what CBD may be able to offer your pet, it is best we cover what CBD is and why it is so popular right now.

CBD is a chemical compound known as a cannabinoid. These are compounds that are commonly found in cannabis plants, like hemp and marijuana. There are many cannabinoids out there. In fact, scientists have identified over 113 so far, but believe that there are more yet to be discovered. With so many out there, it is only natural that you have heard of more than just one of them.

The other cannabinoid that you have likely heard of is tetrahydrocannabinol (though, you are probably more familiar with its acronym, THC). THC is arguably more well-known than CBD. This is because of the effect that it creates in humans. It is psychoactive, meaning that it creates the intoxication (the high) that is so commonly associated with cannabis.

Because CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, they are often thought to be practically the same. However, that is not the case. They have a lot of differences, but there is one in particular that you should be aware of. CBD is not psychoactive. It does not get its user high or inebriated in any way. It is also important to note that THC is considered to be highly toxic to animals. You should never give your pet THC.

Most CBD manufacturers extract the cannabinoid from hemp rather than marijuana. There are a couple of very good reasons for this. One of them is that hemp has a very high concentration of CBD and a very low concentration of THC (less than 0.3%). Marijuana, on the other hand, is the opposite. It has low levels of CBD and high levels of THC. This makes hemp much easier to get CBD from.

The other good reason is that hemp is federally legal in the United States, but marijuana is not. This is again because on the levels of THC in each plant. Marijuana’s high levels means that the federal government is hesitant to legalize it. But hemp having a low enough level to not cause any actual intoxication, removes any hesitations surrounding it. However, some states have legalized marijuana, either only for medical purposes or for general use by anyone over the age of 21.

So, now that we have covered what exactly CBD is, let’s talk about how it could help your pet.

What could it do for pets?

It is not uncommon for dogs and cats to have nervous dispositions. Sometimes it is genetic, sometimes it is due to a previous trauma. Whatever the reason, it can lead to a lot of grief for both the pet and the owner. Many owners have stories about upset pets during holidays like the Fourth of July where there are firework shows. Others have stories about angry calls from neighbors complaining about a pet howling when left home alone. So, how does a pet owner keep their pet calm?

CBD may be able to help lower mental stress. One of the main things that CBD is known for is being able to help people achieve a greater sense of calm. There have been many studies that have focused on this very subject. For example, this study put test subjects in a very stressful situation. Some of the subjects were give CBD before, others were not. Those who had been given the CBD were more confident and found the situation easier to deal with than those who were not given the cannabinoid.

Another study used mice to understand what CBD many be able to do for an anxious disposition. The researchers used chronically stressed mice, giving some of them CBD and giving others nothing. They concluded that the mice given the CBD were much calmer than the others.

Unfortunately, there are not many studies out there looking at how CBD effects the state of mind of dogs and cats. However, like humans, these animals have Endocannabinoid Systems. This is a series of receptors that cannabinoids interact with. This system and its interactions with CBD are often cited as the reason that CBD may be able to help calm people. This could mean that it could help your pet in a similar way.

How do I give CBD to my pet?

Most dog owners will attest that their dog will eat just about anything. However, many of those same people will also be able to tell you just how difficult it can be to get a dog to take a pill. Of course, getting a cat to eat anything that is not wet cat food or something that they are not allowed to eat (why do they love chewing on plastic?) can be very difficult. So, how do you get your pet to take something that has an earthy taste, like CBD? You would be surprised at the options that are available.

Just like for humans, there are CBD edibles for pets. These are usually things like normal pet treats but made with CBD instead. These may take a little while before they start working for your pet, because the treat needs to digest before they can start working.

There are also CBD tinctures and oils that you can give your pet. You can mix these in with their regular food. However, like with the CBD treats, it may take a little while for the CBD to start working when administered in this way. If you have a pet that is a picky eater, they might taste the CBD in the food and will not eat it. If that is the case for you, you can instead rub the CBD on the inside of your pet’s jowls or onto their gums. The CBD absorbs into the system from there.

Of course, there are also CBD topicals that are made for pets. These you simply rub into your pet’s paws. However, if you have a squirmy pet, it may not be the best option.

It is best to consult with your veterinarian before starting your pet on CBD. Especially if your furry friend is already taking medication, as some medications do not work as well with CBD. Your veterinarian should know whether or not that will be a problem for your pet.

When you first start giving your pet CBD, you should keep the dosage low for the first little while, to see how they react to it. Keep an eye on their behavior and eating habits. If they seem too lethargic or they are eating less than normal, it is likely that they have been given too much CBD. The cannabinoid does not appear to be dangerous for most animals, but it is not something that anyone or any animal will want to take too much of.

Be sure, when buying a CBD product for your pet that the product is meant for pets. Other products are made with humans in mind and are made differently. It is likely better for your furry friend to use only products that are made with them in mind.

It is also a good idea to keep your pet’s CBD products separate from their regular food and treats, especially if you give your pet CBD treats. They often look like regular treats and may be easily mixed up by someone who is not familiar. As mentioned earlier, CBD does not appear to be dangerous for pets, but it is still not something you would want to give your furry friend too much of.

Unhappy pets often lead to unhappy owners. If your pet deals with an anxious disposition or separation anxiety, you may want to look into CBD. It may be able to help them achieve a greater sense of calm, giving both you and them some much needed, much deserved peace.

If you are looking for a place to start looking into getting some CBD, then you are on the right site. Here on the Panacea Life Sciences website, we have a whole line of high-quality CBD products. There is something for everyone, including your furry friends. On our site we also have many articles exploring several different areas of CBD. What are the effects of CBD on a dog?

There are so many new trends regarding health that come and go. And perhaps you thought cannabidiol (CBD) would be one of them. Think again! CBD is still up and coming and we think here to stay. Why so? CBD has been around for a very long time and is just beginning to be researched more and more. There are also several ways to use CBD, among other hemp plant products. One of these ways surrounds your favorite family pet, man’s best friend or if you prefer, the dog.

CBD for dogs? Isn’t that dangerous? If used properly, CBD may be quite beneficial for your pet. In what ways you may ask? We will answer all of these questions in the next few paragraphs. But, first, let’s get back to the beginning. What is CBD?

What is CBD? Where does it come from?

To understand what CBD is, you must also understand what it is and where it comes from. CBD is one of the 113 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. There are, however, different variations of the Cannabis sativa plant:  One is the Cannabis sativa L. plant, also called industrial hemp, which has very high amounts of CBD and 0.3% or lower amounts of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  Other Cannabis sativa plants have higher concentrations of THC and are categorized as marijuana.

THC is likely a term our readers have heard before. THC is another cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant. This cannabinoid, however, gives psychoactive effects or a ‘high’ when used. That is the major difference between the two cannabinoids. CBD does not give the psychoactive effects, but THC does. This is why CBD is legal in all 50 states whereas THC is only legal in a handful of states. The 2018 Farm Bill gave farmers across the country the ability to grow and sell hemp products. This, again, is because of the low amounts of THC the hemp plant contains. The 0.3% does not have the ability to get users high. CBD has been described to give many different health and wellness benefits. It is also naturally occurring and quite popular for that reason.

CBD + dogs: The effects

So, what effect does CBD have on dogs? Like we have stated before, there is still research that needs to be done surrounding CBD in general. However, there have been a handful of studies that can assist us in understanding the effects of CBD on dogs.

We here at Panacea Life Sciences have conducted our own research geared toward this specific topic. In this study we asked pet owners of dogs with age-related movement issues to give them CBD to see if there would be any improvements to their ability to run, get up from a sitting position, or climb stairs.  We all experience aches and pains with age, or when over-exercising.  The same is true in dogs.  We asked these pet owners to give their dogs CBD twice a day for four weeks consecutively. In general, one milligram of CBD was administered for each 5 kilograms of body weight to ensure the animal was getting the proper amount for its size (an important aspect when giving animals CBD). The owners took an online weekly assessment and before and after videos were taken of dogs doing certain movements. After the four weeks, we found that all of the measures we had taken had significantly improved. The dogs in the study had increased mobility and because of this we can understand that CBD supports joint health leading to an increased quality of life in animals with age-related or other movement issues.

Another study we have done is not about dogs, but, in horses. While this study is not geared toward dogs it can still be helpful when expanding our knowledge of CBD effects for pets and animals in general. These horses were given 50 milligrams of CBD, regardless of body weight, two times a day for two weeks. These horses were selected to participate in the study as they either had visible movement issues or exhibited signs of anxiety.  At the end of the two weeks the results indicated that CBD was helpful for the horses who had gait issues and not all, but some of the horses had less feelings of anxiousness. Panacea plans on exploring equine anxiety more thoroughly in a directed study in the near future.

Now, what do we do with this information? Each animal is unique, so it is important to ask your veterinarian before administering CBD to your dog or other type of pet. We always say that starting off with the lowest amount of CBD is the best way to begin. Start small and slowly increase until the desired effects are observed. It is also important to note that THC can be toxic to animals, so the CBD product you choose should be THC free. What CBD products do we have for your furry friends? Read on to find out more.
